Wehrlein: “You can also play the lottery!” / System E

Almost always a stage where no one wanted to take the lead and therefore had to use a lot of power: the Formula E debut at Misano provoked strong reactions from some drivers.

Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein (contact victim), who lost the championship lead due to the first result being dismissed, explained: “This race was very intense in terms of energy management. It didn’t feel like racing in the first few laps. A lot of money was invested in preparing to get the last hundred, which no longer mattered because you only have to save energy directly. You can pass ten cars… The track is suitable for Formula E, but not the number of laps. We were very slow in qualifying, third place was a very good place to start. On other tracks that would be half the guarantee of a good result, but not here. You can also play the lottery! We have to release the accelerator very early to save energy. In my case, I had to break out of the corner to save money and not lead. In another series this will be a brake test, here it is normal.”

Jaguar’s teammate, Mitch Evans criticizes Misano’s song: “I don’t think this song is right for us. I think street courses are better. There’s a lot going on, you’re always at risk of collisions, it’s a very bad situation here.” Evans describes his setback in the finish as follows: “I had a damaged wing from the address and therefore a balance problem. Sixth place is a big disappointment after a poor position. Hopefully I can carry the momentum from one lap into the race on Sunday.”

Nico Müller (Abt Cupra) admitted that the points were not achieved this time: “Qualifying was very good. But unfortunately racing and qualifying are two different things. We knew the race would be tough, but we hoped we could stay in the points. But our package didn’t allow you more. There was no chance. In retrospect, you can think of positioning yourself differently strategically, then maybe something better would have come out. Focusing on opponents around you and energy management at the same time is very difficult.

Apart from the winner Antonio Felix da Costa and Oliver Rowland and Jake Dennis, who reached the podium, only Maserati driver Max Günther was satisfied: “That was the highest level today. The weekend has been very difficult so far. Sessions the free training couldn’t have been worse. I went into the qualifying without any rhythm, where seventh place was very good and put me in a good position for the race. I managed it well, I always looked at the position, I chose the right attack mode, I didn’t lose a part And I was there when the last race started. In the crowd, it’s hard to keep an eye on the steering wheel. Sometimes that works better more. It’s another good result for Maserati.”
