An Iowa man has been killed in Escambia County after being ejected from a car that crashed into several trees.

The accident occurred late Saturday evening in Escambia County as the man was identified as Christopher L. Wirtz, 24, of Sioux City, Iowa. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident occurred when Wirtz was driving a 2015 Ford Focus westbound on Highway 97 at a high rate of speed.

The Ford subsequently veered off the road and onto the shoulder of the highway, subsequently hitting several trees before coming to a stop. As the Ford hit the trees, Wirtz was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

The Florida Highway Patrol is continuing their investigation into the incident, which includes an examination of the car and its potential mechanical failures. Wirtz’s family has been notified of the accident, and further details are expected to be released.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Wirtz’s family in this difficult time.
