An Iowa mother and her grandfather have been charged with misdemeanors in what police have described as a “disturbing” incident involving a newborn baby.
The Cedar Rapids Police Department said in a press release that officers were called to a roadside on the morning of August 3 after a passerby reported finding a bag containing a baby.
The infant was unharmed, and it was quickly determined that the mother, 27-year-old Jessica Roberts, and her grandfather, 72-year-old Carl Roberts, were responsible for placing the child in the bag.
The police have not identified a motive for the alleged crime and have not released any further details.
Jessica Roberts and Carl Roberts have both been charged with child endangerment, a misdemeanor offense under Iowa law.
If convicted, each could face up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $1,875.
The Cedar Rapids Police Department has characterized the incident as “disturbing,” and has said it is continuing to investigate the matter.
The baby has been placed in the care of the Iowa Department of Human Services.
The Cedar Rapids Police Department has suggested that anyone with information related to the case should contact their office.
