Is it suitable for vacation?

The German Alpine Road leads through the Bavarian Alps and ends at Lake Constance. The route is not only interesting, but also a great opportunity to test the Kia Sportage Mild Hybrid. Our seven-day practice test:

Day 1: The color combination Experience Green/Black Metallic (roof, pillars, edges and rims) is suitable for the test car, Sportage 1.6 T-GDI 48V AWD DCT (type name as a mathematical formula) in the top line of equipment, GT – Line. , very nice. And the interior can also be seen (almost everywhere). Aluminum and piano-finish plastics give the car the premium appeal the manufacturer desires – as long as you don’t look too closely. Because the lower part of the door panel is made of hard plastic, which even significantly reduces the feeling of high quality, as this test will show. Value, which, however, has its price. At just under 50,000 euros, the test car is only slightly cheaper than a similarly configured VW Tiguan.

The amount of space is also not premium in the sense of hospitality. Even with two people a week on the German Alpine Road, the trunk and back seat are stretched to their limits – although no driver tends to take his entire wardrobe with him on a journey. For a family of four, a three-week vacation can be an impossible challenge when it comes to luggage management. A problem that the Sportage is not the only one to deal with. Instead, one should remember that the first part of the word compact SUV is not accidental.

Day 2: In times when the ratio of “open road – road works – open road” has been changed to “road – open road – road works”, a long road trip can be anything but fun. But at least the Sportage ensures a comfortable and safe ride. From the electrically adjustable, heated and air-conditioned driver’s seat to the heated steering wheel and size-adjustable cup holder to the full range of safety aids, nothing is left wanting.

The top equipment of the Sportage is brand specific.

Day 3: Lindau on/at Lake Constance enjoys a reputation as a beautiful town, as the many tourists on Father’s Day weekend demonstrate. The fact that the Sportage can be steered through dense stop-and-go traffic with a little finger is certainly not because it could shine with a particularly open body. Instead, it’s the safety and comfort assistants, such as the invisible side assistant, that make it so much easier to dodge, turn and reverse through the alleys of the old town on the island of Lindau. Speaking of safety: Even sporty people should like how the Kia relaxes the hairpin bends of the nearly six-kilometer long Rohrach Gorge to the town of Scheidegg. At best, one would wish for more direct steering.

Day 4: What exactly is the point of choosing a gentle hybrid, and what exactly distinguishes it from other hybrids? First of all, unlike plug hybrids, it is not necessary to stick to any kind of socket. Fully electric driving up to 40.50 km, as with most plug-in hybrids, is not possible. Since hybrids usually rely on a powerful 48 V battery, “48 V” is often used as a synonym, as in the case of the Sportage. In a small hybrid, also, the electric car supports the combustion engine, for example during start-up or when coasting, that is, for a short time driving at high speed with the engine turned off. Result: saving fuel, although it can be controlled. According to the manufacturer, this saving should be between 10 and 20 percent. Kia, for example, specifies the consumption of 180 hp 48 V, which is equipped with all-wheel drive, as 6.0 liters per 100 kilometers. But more on that later.

Day 5: Life is good in and for the Sportage. Because there is no more overnight accommodation due to the long weekend – at least not at a price that will not immediately cost a third of the monthly salary – they sleep in the car without any more worries. Sure, you’ve slept better, but you’ve also slept worse, and then even in bed. Kia’s seats are wide enough and reclining enough, their backs are low enough to pass the night comfortably. Disadvantage of wide seats: The space between the seat and the door is very small, so that your hand comes into contact with the door panel every time you turn it on and adjust it or reach into the door shelf. However, at first one is surprised by the daily increase in scratches on the cheap hard plastic – until one realizes that one’s own wristwatch is the culprit. Now you soon remove every scratch and the fact that the painting is gone. However, it’s a shame that the high-end interior now has this fatal flaw due to the savings of – it felt like – a few more cents on soft plastics.

Day 6: The test car’s rich equipment, complete with the exception of the optional panoramic roof, has already been praised here. But where there is light, there is also a shadow somewhere. The countless possibilities offered by the infotainment system cannot be understood without the daily study of the manual, which probably many people use, not only in a symbolic sense. Menus and sub-menus, dual functions and misunderstandings can get to your last courage, as is the case with the current Golf, which has been criticized for this. Ultimately, however, one enjoys the abundance of functionality, simply because the collision avoidance function prevented hitting a tree when backing up, which would probably have caused real damage. The driver should be spared the embarrassing question of why this tree was not visible despite the surround view camera.

Day 7: Eleven hours for 740 kilometers is generally torture. The fact that you still get home without back pain and even happy proves the excellent quality of the seats once again. At first glance, the 7.8 liters of petrol per 100 km, which the Sportage has claimed on a round trip of about 1800 km, does not seem ideal. But if you look closely, the desire is put into perspective a little. First of all, there is a weight of 1.8 tons, including two tall people and luggage. The topography of a route with a series of steep passes is not necessarily the typical combination of thirds you expect. And when returning via the autobahn, fast stop-and-go lanes of up to 20 km alternate at walking speed with sections that can reach speeds of up to 150 km/h. In addition, due to heavy rain, the all-wheel drive is switched on twice, and the range of users (air conditioners, infotainment system and radio and navigation system and, alternatively, seat heating or ventilation) are used frequently, so. that 7.8 liters finally seems acceptable. In short: All in all, the Sportage Mild Hybrid is a great commuter car – at least as long as it’s not more than two people traveling for a long time.
