It’s official, American electric cars will arrive in Europe this year

A year after announcing that it is considering a return to Europe, General Motors is starting to give some details on this topic. The American group should return to the Old Continent in the summer, but first it will focus on the Nordic countries, with American electric cars.

From 2035, all new cars sold in Europe will have to be electric or run on synthetic fuel. A decision that does not please all manufacturers, such as Toyota for example, which does not believe in all electricity, but which has now been recorded. despite the mistrust of some countries like Germany.

Back this year

But this is also a great opportunity for other brands, starting with those from China. Which obviously worries experts, who fear the invasion that Europe wants to fight with several measures. But if the builders of the Middle Kingdom are determined to invest in the Old Continent, this is also the case for the Americans. And not only Tesla, whose Model 3 and Model Y are hits around the world.

Indeed, another group from across the Atlantic is also very interested in our market. This is General Motors, which announced a year ago its desire to return with us. For the record, the parent company of Cadillac and GMC, among others, disappeared from Europe in 2017, the year of the sale of Opel to the PSA group, which was Stellantis in 2021. In question, very strict environmental standards.

Time General Motors is starting to get electric service, the group is more ready than ever to take revenge and come back strong, without any hot cars this time. If the latter would not have given much information by now, we are finally starting to know more thanks to the resolutions of Jaclyn McQuaid, President of GM Europe.

When asked by Automotive News, this confirms that the range of vehicles that will be sold in the region will be exclusively electric. But it is not the most important. Because it also advertises that The return of the American group is planned for this season, without however giving a more precise date. Nor did it announce which countries will be targeted first.

Not with us

But a source familiar with the matter, who asked not to be named, appears to be well-informed about the matter. This informs us that Nordic countries would be very interesting to the company. This will be the case especially in Norway, where sales of electric cars have increased, while the government wants all new cars sold from 2025 to be zero exhaust.

Sweden, Denmark or even Finland should also be affected, although nothing has yet been officially confirmed by the manufacturer. At the moment, it is also not known which cars will be part of the trip. But everything suggests that this is probably the case for the new Cadillac Lyriq but also for the Chevrolet Equinox, the real competitor of the Renault Mégane E-Tech on paper.

Will this also be the case for the Hummer EV? Not quite possible, since the Ford F-150 Electric just started its sale in Europe, through Norway. But the Hummer EV is not suitable for Europe, with high fuel consumption and a weight exceeding 3.5 tons unlike the Ford pickup.

It is possible that the electric Cadillac Lyriq is the first car of the group to cross the Atlantic, when the brand will be present this year at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. For the event, he will be engaged to a hybrid hypercar that will come to rub shoulders with the Peugeot 9X8.

Not only that, because the old brand can also be revived for the occasion. It has to be Saturn, founded in 1985 and dissolved in 2010, which had the highest win rate of the group at its peak. However, General Motors hopes to be able to compete with Tesla, but on the other hand he does not foresee. there are no factories to build in the Old Continent For now. This can cause problems with the ecological bonus.
