The Jayhawks cruised to a commanding 96-68 victory over Howard in the opening round of the tournament, showcasing their technical finesse and difficulty on the court. Kansas displayed a tenacious defensive effort, holding the Bison to just 42.7 percent shooting from the floor and 7.1 percent from beyond the arc.
The Jayhawks began the game with a fervent intensity, jumping out to an early 8-0 lead. Kansas continued to build on this lead throughout the first half, going into halftime with a commanding 48-32 advantage.
The second half was much of the same as the Jayhawks outscored the Bison 48-36 in the final 20 minutes of play. The Jayhawks were led by Devon Dotson who finished with a game-high 25 points and six assists. Kansas also had four other players in double figures, including Udoka Azubuike who had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
The win for Kansas was the team’s 22nd consecutive opening round victory. The Jayhawks will now move on to face Auburn in the second round of the tournament. Kansas will look to continue their dominance as they aim for a deep run in the tournament.
