Jeep, the real revolution in electricity? Newer models may also contain gasoline

Il Jeep brand is leading a product strategy whose goal will be to increase sales in the United States. This strategy includes two fully electric SUVs: Jeep Recon and Jeep Wagoneer S. However, recent statements from Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa suggest a possible change of direction.

Filosa indicated the need for Jeep to maintain and increase the scale of its business, which may require the involvement of petrol versions in new forms. For this reason, a general push towards electricity is, for now, out of the question, at least for now and at least in the US market.

This approach has already been successfully adopted by the Jeep Avenger in Europe, where demand for the petrol variant was very well received despite the presence of its fully electric counterpart. There the flexibility of the Stellantis STLA platformwhich the Recon and Wagoneer S are based on, will allow the integration of all electrical and heating systems, and therefore we should expect that this approach will also be reserved for the next SUVs.

Therefore, Filosa does not rule out the possibility that the Recon and Wagoneer S may also be offered with petrol engines, if this meets market demand. This decision is driven by a desire to capitalize on current business opportunities and the reputation of the Jeep brand. The goal is to reach one million sales in the United States: this prospect is an absolute priority, and Filosa declared himself very optimistic in this regard.

However, the electric/non-electric question is not the only issue raised by Jeep. In a recent interview with colleagues from Autocar, Eric Laforge, head of the Jeep Europe brand, addressed the issue of the presence of SUVs in the context of urban policies which is increasingly aimed at excluding large vehicles. Laforge defended the future of SUVs, pointing to their popularity among consumers and perceived safety.
