The Jeep brand regularly continues to distribute its various models. Based on the success of the 4xe recharged hybrids introduced to the portfolio (more than 25% of the brand’s total sales on the Polish market), the offer was extended to new vehicles with a hybrid system. I’m talking about the Compass and Renegade models with the new e-Hybrid drive. It is a plug-in hybrid alternative based on the 1.3 Turbo T4 engine and proven over the years. diesel 1.6 Multijet.

The e-Hybrid technology used in the new Jeeps is not a conventional hybrid technology that combines an internal combustion engine with an electric motor. Here we are talking about the so-called smooth hybrid, ie technology that supports the operation of the internal combustion engine in certain conditions. But it is also not an ordinary linear hybrid, because in this case Jeeps can only move on electricity for a distance of several meters.

MHEV 1.5 Turbo T4 130 HP DCT

The heart of the e-Hybrid drive is a 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine (130 HP and 240 Nm) introduced by Stellantis in 2022. It is complemented by a BSG (Belt Start Generator) starting system that ensures a quick start and for the stability of the unit with an electric motor connected to a seven-speed gearbox with a double clutch, driving the car to the front axle. The built-in 48 volt electric motor produces 15 kW (20 hp) and 55 Nm (135 Nm for input to the gearbox), allowing the wheels to be driven even when the combustion engine is switched off.

The Renegade and Compass e-Hybrid are vehicles designed in such a way that their starting is always silent, as well as starting from a standstill using electricity. It’s hard to argue with the smooth operation of the system and the high performance culture of the combustion unit, especially when compared to the smaller 1.0 T3 unit, or to the harder-working Multijet.

Driving for a while without production

Low speed rides are dirt free. In the city, electricity is often used as a source of inspiration (this process can be observed in digital clocks). This is where Jeeps equipped with the e-Hybrid system will do best. Crawling in first gear, frequent braking and starting from a standstill are the best conditions for a hybrid system, which certainly has something to do in urban conditions. Parking is also ecological using the e-Parking system, which takes control of the car and automatically enters the parking space in the electric vehicle.

A 48V battery with a capacity of 0.8 kWh, which is placed under the driver’s seat, provides energy to the electric motor without reducing the interior space. A lithium-ion battery maintains the operation of the air conditioner and other on-board systems when the vehicle is stopped and the automatic Start and Stop function. Energy is constantly replenished during driving thanks to the automatic charging function when stopping again or decelerating (kinetic energy converted into electrical energy). A battery diagram or power flow animation that can be placed on an on-board computer shows the battery’s state of charge in real time.

The DCT transmission is sluggish

The electric motor does not lag in producing torque, thus increasing the performance of the combustion engine. However, reservations can be made about the DCT’s operating style. The speed of this procedure is not dizzying. If the gas is pressurized to the floor, it takes time to react. Once slowed down, the Renegade and Compass pick up speed well. The time to reach the first 100 km / h is acceptable – the Soldier needs more than 9 seconds and the heavier Compass more than 10 seconds.

The way to drive the vehicles described does not appear in any particular way. Comfort-oriented suspension and power steering discourage aggressive driving. These models were built with the aim of covering kilometers without haste and the driving system was precisely calculated from this angle. After all, new Jeep products are designed to be gentle with fuel, not attractive with performance and driving precision.

Oil consumption

The manufacturer communicates that compared to previous gasoline models, the e-Hybrid versions offer up to 15 percent lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Vehicle catalog data informs about fuel consumption in the combined cycle maintained at the level of 5.7-6.1 l / 100 km (WLTP). During tests with these cars in and around Warsaw, the on-board computers calculated the average fuel consumption at less than one liter more. Drivers trained in ecological driving should achieve satisfactory results in the assemblies, similar to the catalog results. On the other hand, the 1.6 MultiJet diesel will certainly have no rival on the road.

Off road driving? It is better to forget about such trips with e-Hybrid Jeeps. There is no four-wheel drive in this version. The Renegade and Compass are, of course, vehicles with safe ground clearance that will easily climb up and down a dirt track, but they have nothing to do with the legendary off-road qualities of Jeeps. These special editions only pretend to be SUVs in appearance.

Upland equipment version

The Renegade and Compass appear in a new, more equipped version of the Upland, positioned for hybrids, during the introduction of the e-Hybrid vehicle. The nature of this species shows concern for the environment. The interior attracts attention with interesting stylistic details, and it is interesting to note that the elements of the covers are made of processed materials. The special seat upholstery is woven from recycled PET bottles, fished from the sea. On the bodies of the cars, besides the new color “Matter Azur” and the end of the brown grille, you can also count on decorative stickers, a contrasting black roof and black aluminum rims.

Hybrid Jeep Price

Electricity supply clearly affected the price increase, with good equipment added to the final bill. To buy a city-friendly Jeep with a smooth hybrid, you have to dig deep into your pocket.

Jeep Renegade e-Hybrid costs a minimum of PLN 124,900. The diesel 1.6 Multijet 130 KM with the same power is cheaper by around 10,000. PLN, and the basic gasoline 1.0 Turbo T3 costs about 20 thousand. zlotys. a little. The Upland equipment variant (as shown in the photo) costs at least PLN 146,500.

A new hybrid powertrain was introduced to Jeeps presented to drivers who drive their vehicles mainly in urban and suburban traffic. People who do not like to change their behavior related to the use of the car, will not have difficulty finding themselves in these examples. A common combination is for people who just don’t want to load their car, or who can’t afford to do so. Fighting cables is common in plug-in hybrids. When this is not done and the constant use of the socket is lost, running a hybrid plug is no longer useful. The e-Hybrid technology is a simple and unobtrusive solution.
