The son of Jan Magnussen will move to BMW Motorsport next season where he will drive the M Hybrid V8. It is currently unknown whether the Dane will compete in the IMSA series or the World Sportscar Championship (FIA WEC).
The 2025 season is coming into focus more and more. Now BMW has also signed the next driver. This is Kevin Magnussen, who is currently participating in his race (for now) last weekend in Formula 1. The 32-year-old Dane completed a total of 185 Formula 1 races between 2014 and 2024.
“I am happy and proud to be able to represent a famous brand like BMW in the most legendary race in the world,” said Magnussen. “After ten years in Formula 1, I am starting an exciting new chapter. I am looking forward to the challenge in the most innovative and advanced sports cars in the history of endurance. My biggest thanks go to BMW M Motorsport for this wonderful opportunity. I cannot waiting to start preparations and looking forward to start the 2025 season with another team.”
It is currently unknown which race series Magnussen will compete in for BMW. The M Hybrid V8 not only participates in the FIA WEC, but also in the American IMSA series. Magnussen already knows this. In 2021 he competed in the American Championship in a Cadillac DPi. In the same year he competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans with his father Jan Magnussen – and drove an Oreca 07 in the LMP2 class.
In 2022, Magnussen also competed in the 24 Hours of Daytona (which is the IMSA season opener). In 2022 he was supposed to be in the Peugeot 9X8 in the FIA WEC hypercar class. But then he went back to Formula 1. Now the next step in the model will follow in 2025.
«Kevin Magnussen is a great addition to our LMDh program. He has consistently shown his pace at the highest level in Formula 1 for over a decade,” says Andreas Roos (Head of BMW M Motorsport). “Because of his great experience, he is a real asset to our project. The fact that he has already completed a full season with a sports car model in 2021 is an additional advantage for us, as it will certainly make his adjustment phase with the BMW M Hybrid V8 simple. I am very pleased that Kevin Magnussen is now part of the BMW M Motorsport family.”
