This car in many ways defies modern motoring. It is big, it should be non-ecological, because it has a powerful and large diesel engine, but it is able to burn less than many small crossovers with an engine of half the capacity. In addition, it is not quite modern and full of gadgets. How does the Land Rover Discovery do on a daily basis?
Land Rover Discovery. Outside and inside
How is it that a car the size of a hot dog kiosk, with a 3.0-liter diesel engine, 300 hp and 650 Nm of torque, can burn less fuel than a car 2-3 times smaller with three times smaller engines? Can ecologists make sense of this for me? Well, we’ll deal with the engine later, in the meantime, let’s take a look at this colossus. Land Rover Discovery is a giant that offers a classic line of SUVs from the beginning of their existence, when no one thought to create sports versions, reduced and enhanced.
Here we are dealing with a pure traditional SUV. Land Rover Discovery is 4,956mm long, 2,073mm wide, 1,888mm tall and 2,923mm wheelbase. This giant weighs more than 2.2 tons and you can feel it, but is it a problem? All in all, it’s not, because driving this car is fun and hassle-free. Of course, in the parking lot, residential streets or in the city, it does not feel the best, but in all other situations it is very good. For the test, I got a version with black varnish, which gives the whole thing a little heavy character, but I have seen versions with silver varnish, graphite, champagne, etc. and they seemed very good. A little black… makes the car look older.
It is also quite characteristic in the interior and I must admit that I am not completely sure about this style. On the one hand, the interiors of the Evoque and Velar appeal to me more and fit their character, but on the other hand, I felt at home in the Discovery. It’s a strange feeling, but once inside I felt good, comfortable, safe. High-quality materials and fit make for a good look, although in some areas they could be better. These are details rather than major errors. For example, a flat and completely empty panel in the central tunnel can be arranged slightly differently. Sure, there’s a storage compartment, but that flat, matte surface somehow catches the eye. I also didn’t really like the silver arches in the middle, which look really cheap. But like I said, these are details and I know that others may like all of this. In general, the interior is stable, calm, a little old, but in a good way.
Comfort is also old fashioned. It is smooth and soft. When we’re on the couch, there’s plenty of room in the back. The electrically adjustable backrests and the manually adjustable seat distance from the front seats allow you to choose the right position, but when you slide the sofa back, the position is like in a luxury limousine. In total, we have almost three different chairs here. Two adults can travel in complete comfort and luxury, but if someone sits inside and is narrow, it will be very comfortable, eg thanks to the flat floor. Dedicated vents, different climate zones, nothing to complain about! Passengers in the third row will not complain either, and there will be room for luggage behind them. As I said – it’s a colossus! The capacity of the luggage compartment is 986 liters (5-seat configuration), and with the second row of seats folded down, the luggage space increases to an impressive 2,061 liters. Add to that the 89 liter fuel tank and you can go on a long journey.
The car is based on the JLR D7u platform and is produced eg in Solihull in England and Nitra in Slovakia.
Land Rover Discovery. Technical data, performance and fuel consumption
Under the hood of the test car, the top diesel engine 3.0 D i6, i.e. a six-cylinder engine with 300 hp and 650 Nm of torque, was supported by a hybrid hybrid system (mHEV) that supports starting with the Start system /Stop. All this affects not only fuel consumption, which will be discussed shortly, but above all, work culture.
It is velvety, pleasant, elegant, mechanical hum of the “six” line. In addition, the power of 300 hp and 650 Nm of torque, together with an automatic 8-speed transmission and four-wheel drive, make the car very pleasant and very powerful. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h takes 6.8 seconds, which is a remarkable result for a mammal of about five meters. The maximum speed is 209 km / h. And the flame?
Average fuel consumption for WLTP is 8.3 l / 100 km and this result is quite achievable. It is true that in the city you should consider the consumption of more than 10 l / 100 km, but on the road this car can be really economical, of course for its dimensions and capabilities.
- fuel consumption in the city (50 km / h) – 10-12 l/100 km;
- fuel consumption outside the city (70-90 km / h) – 6-7 l/100 km;
- fuel consumption on the road (120 km / h) – 7-8 l/100 km;
- fuel consumption on the highway (140 km / h) – 8-9 l/100 km.
Land Rover Discovery. Price and equipment
We will buy an affordable Land Rover Discovery for PLN 288,100. For a tested copy with a 3.0 D i6 engine with a power of 300 hp, you will have to spend at least PLN 394,800 for the R-Dynamic S variant. We will pay PLN 448,900 for the R-Dynamic HSE version, and PLN 477,100 for the Metropolis version. Of course, this is only a hall for salons, because many options are paid.
We may purchase, among others:
- optional varnish – from PLN 5,640 to PLN 10,900;
- aluminum rims with a diameter of 22 inches – even PLN 25,850;
- two-stage transfer case with reducer – PLN 2,210;
- panoramic roof, two pieces, with an opening front part – PLN 12,030;
- tinted windows from the B pillar – PLN 3,340;
- electric retractable towbar – PLN 7,940;
- heated, air-conditioned massage chairs with 20 channels – PLN 22,700.
These are just some of the options that we can buy with Discovery. Sometimes the price depends on the version, sometimes it is normal, but adding more than PLN 100,000 in options is not a problem.
Land Rover Discovery is an SUV – designed according to the old school, but it can put to shame many “modern” and full of crossover gadgets. It is very easy, comfortable, pleasant to drive and receive, and also very powerful and sometimes surprisingly economical. Is it a dying breed? I hope not. It’s true that I like the Velar more, but I really respect the Discovery for its maturity and lack of fun and modern precision.
Land Rover Discovery – benefits:
- it is still one of the most attractive SUVs in its segment;
- many customization options and additional equipment;
- very powerful and very economical diesel engine;
- incredible travel comfort and plenty of space;
- a car made of old-school SUVs;
- Impeccable ergonomics and very functional trunk and bench.
Land Rover Discovery – cons:
- selected materials in the interior;
- A little too old-fashioned for some;
- after all – the very high price of additives.
