Land Rover Range Rover Evoque 2.0 D i4 204 hp. Does diesel in such a car make sense?

The diesel engine is becoming a less popular option in almost every segment. On the one hand, it is the fault of the new regulations and the manufacturers that put aside this type of car, on the other hand, gasoline engines and hybrid drives, even of the MHEV type, provide low fuel consumption. So how does the Range Rover Evoque with the most powerful diesel engine fare in this mix?

I must honestly admit that I did not fully understand this combination and the presence of a diesel engine in this model. It’s a short drive that will spend most of its automotive life in the city, where gasoline engines perform well. Besides, maybe I’m old-fashioned, but this type of drive doesn’t suit me in the premium segment in the compact version. A big limousine? Yes, I’m not worried here. But a compact and very stylish crossover? Have I changed my mind after the test? But let’s start with appearances.

The Range Rover Evoque has won many design competitions for good reason, and Victoria Beckham was once responsible for its appearance. Already the first generation looked amazing, and the presence of convertible models on the market was a real surprise. Today we no longer have such attractions, but the new body of this car looks better. It is a very beautiful and stylish car, which in a compact body has many stylistic tastes and accents. Many people say that it is “baby Velar” and it is difficult to disagree. However, let’s face it – it’s very attractive, because the Velar is one of the most beautiful SUVs on the market.

The front of the Evoque is decorated with narrow lights and a characteristic signature, in the R-Dynamic version the bumper is decorated with ramps on the air intakes, which add severity to the car, the side line is muscular and because of the large slope. , the symmetrical line of the roof, looks very low and narrow. The tapering wall of the windows additionally emphasizes the perfectly rendered silhouette. Covering the back of the front wheel arch and even, close to the geometric line of the windows looks good. In the case of a two-tone body, it looks good. The rear is dominated by very wide lights, which cover the sides of the body and are visually connected by a textured strap. It is worth looking at the signature of the lights, which has an interesting 3D effect. Like I said, there’s a lot of flavor here!

At first glance, the interior of the Range Rover Evoque is also minimalist, but all you need to do is turn on the car and the driver and passengers see the main tilting screen, a standard climate panel with various functions, and a large car screen. virtual clock. Yes, the interior has three large, high-quality screens that can be overwhelming at first, but controlling them is very easy and intuitive. Of course, as long as we are not currently moving on balance, because pointing the finger at a specific task is completely broken. The interior is very nice and if someone likes modern, but minimalist style, they will be happy. The quality of the materials is poor, although the amount of piano black on the steering wheel and center console is very high.

As for space, it’s just a compact crossover with all its advantages and disadvantages. There is enough space in the back. The couch is great, as is the arm rest and all the accessories, including air vents and heated outdoor seats in the back seat. Of course, the car is a technical relative of the Jaguar E-Pace, it is built on the JLR PTA platform and is produced, among others, in the Chinese Changshu. The trunk has a capacity of 472 or 1156 liters, respectively, and the fuel tank can hold up to 65 liters.

Under the hood, the 2.0 D i4 engine produces 204hp and 430Nm of torque, connected to a 9-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive. In terms of work culture, it is average. You can expect silence and gentleness from a car of this type, but this engine, especially after a “cold” start, unfortunately does not deliver. The sound is also thin and does not provide any pleasure during hard driving. It’s a pity, because the car is very powerful and accelerates very well. We wait only 8.5 seconds to reach 100 km / h, and accelerating from 80 to 120 km / h takes only 6.2 seconds. The maximum speed is 213 km / h. One cannot complain about mobility and dynamics. What does the flare look like?

The two-litre four-cylinder diesel unit used is unsurprising in terms of fuel consumption. It’s just good, but if the fuel consumption was 1-2 l / 100km lower in the city and at high speed, we can talk about good results that can hide any loss.

  • fuel consumption in the city 50 km / h: 8-9 l / 100 km;
  • fuel consumption outside the city 70-90 km / h: 5-6 l / 100 km;
  • fuel consumption at 100-120 km / h: 6.5-7.5 l / 100 km;
  • fuel consumption at 140 km / h: 8-9 l / 100 km.

Fortunately, the handling of the Range Rover Evoque is a pleasant surprise. It’s all well and good, but the car doesn’t shake and doesn’t try to move forward from every corner of speed. I admit that driving this car gave me a lot of fun and when I forgot that the diesel engine is working under the hood, I enjoyed every ride. I send many praises towards the silence. Engineers have tried a lot in this regard and I am very curious to see how this car works with a gasoline engine that will definitely be able to work with a great culture that matches the character of the car.

The scope of the compact Range Rover is also very wide. Model with 2.0 D i4 engine with 204 hp output Automatic Distribution and a four-wheel drive costs at least PLN 247,700. It will be a variant of R-Dynamic S, which includes LED lights (standard), leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, 180 W audio system, 10-inch display, analog clocks, etc. Extra? There are many of them, including:

  • optional varnish – 5010 or 7450 zlotys;
  • 20-inch rims – PLN 9380;
  • 21-inch rims – from PLN 14,080;
  • adaptive suspension – PLN 5980;
  • panoramic roof – PLN 10,490;
  • colored windows – PLN 2480;
  • Matrix LED lamps – PLN 10 760;
  • electric tail – PLN 3730.

Expensive? A lot, but this is part of a full payment and the possibility of a very wide configuration and customization, unfortunately, costs money.

After testing the Range Rover Evoque with a diesel engine, I made a clear opinion about this car. Maybe a little harsh, but everyone has the right to do that. Would I like a car like that? Sure, but with a gasoline engine! I also know that my dream setup would cost a lot of money and a proper approach would not take the place, but the Evoque is a very successful method. Who knows, maybe even the most attractive on the market?
