F1 McLaren: Lando Norris unexpectedly second in China: ‘The team’s hard work is now paying off’

Lando Norris had a great Sunday in Shanghai. The McLaren leader managed to keep a cool head during all the chaos in China and eventually crossed the line in second place, much to his surprise.

Norris started from P4 on Sunday morning and managed to keep a calm head despite all the fighting and eventually crossed the line in second. In the last lap it looked like Pérez was closing the gap on McLaren and that happened quickly. However, a few laps before the flag dropped, it was Norris who increased the pace and the gap remained around five seconds. As a result, the Briton managed to finish second and add eighteen important points. He was also awarded the ‘Driver of the Day’ award by the fans.

Unexpected

After the race and in front of Nico Rosberg’s camera, Norris explains: “I’m really surprised and I’m also happy for the whole team, but the pit stops also went very well. Today it’s all done and to be honest “I know I don’t know why it’s all been like as it is today.” Norris started the race from the pole, but was unable to convert that into a victory. “It was an easier job I had today than yesterday. I was able to push really well, because the car felt really good today, somewhere on the podium so I can’t complain.”

Bet

Still, Norris expected a strong Ferrari early on, but Red Bull and Pérez in particular did not progress as he had initially thought. “Well, I was surprised by several things, the lack of speed in Ferrari today, but also our speed matched that of Red Bull, I did not expect that today. on the podium is a nice surprise and it shows that the team is working hard and now it is paying off.” The Brit also thinks so. “I had a bet that I would finish 35 seconds behind Ferrari, so I was completely wrong. Fortunately I was wrong.”
