Ferrari with a long sports car history at Imola / FIA WEC

The second round of the 2024 season of the World Championship of Automobiles (FIA WEC) is on the agenda on April 21. For Ferrari, Imola is a home game. The Mythos brand from Maranello has already achieved some success in Imola.

It will not be long before the FIA WEC celebrates the second round of the 2024 season. The venue will be the Imola track on April 21. Of course, Ferrari has its home game there. This is clear from the name of the race track: “Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari”. Imola was inaugurated in 1953. The route layout has many variations in length. Most fans of motorcycling have already heard of curves such as “Tosa”, “Acque Minerali” or “Rivazza”.

The route has a rich motorcycle history. For example, Formula 1 has been a guest 30 times. The current WEC (established for the 2012 season) has never existed. However, various long-distance races continued to take place in Imola. For example, the 500 km race in 1972, which was part of the Italian championship. At that time there were two victories for Ferrari: Arturo Merzario won in a clear 312 PB ahead of Jacky Ickx. The (former) sports car world championship, which was called the Prototype World Championship at the time, was last held at Imola in 1984. Hans-Joachim Stuck and Stefan Bellof won in a Porsche 956.

The Intercontinental Le Mans Cup stopped at Imola in 2011. The ILMC was the direct predecessor of the current WEC. Anthony Davidson and Sébastien Bourdais won in the Peugeot 908. In the LMGTE Pro class, Giancarlo Fisichella and Gianmaria Bruni won in the AF Corse-Ferrari 458 Italia GT2. In 2022, the 499P, which Ferrari is currently competing with in the FIA WEC hypercar class, was also unveiled during the “Ferrari Finali Mondial” in Imola.

The route was last rebuilt in 2006/2007 and is currently 4.909 km long – with 3.505 km straight. There are 21 turns (twelve left and nine right).
