The Kia EV8 inherits the Stinger: an E-model with plenty of power and range

The sports car thus succeeds the Kia Stinger, which failed in this country and is now discontinued.

More power than EQS

According to the first leaked technical data, the Kia EV8 is the first model on the new eM platform, which the Hyundai Group will launch from 2025 and is currently being developed as the successor to the E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform). The platform allows the GT1 model to produce a maximum of 450 kW of power (612 hp) with a 200 kW electric motor on the front axle and a 250 kW counterpart on the rear axle. The entry-level version will be a rear-wheel drive version with a 160 kW electric motor, and the all-wheel drive version will come with an additional 160 kW front motor. The range should be between 700 and 800 km.

The storage capacity of NCM (nickel, manganese, cobalt) batteries for performance models is 113.2 kWh. In comparison, the Kia EV9 SUV has 99.8 kWh, the Tesla Model S has 100 kWh, the Mercedes EQS has 107.8 kWh and the Lucid Air has 112 kWh. By the way: E-GMP electric models from Kia, Hyundai and Genesis have a range of 614 km.

New eM system for Kia GT1

The eM platform is not only used in the EV8, which will roll off the assembly line at Kia’s Hwaseong plant, Plant 3. From 2025 onwards, all of the group’s electric models will be based on it. In addition to the improved range and 800 volt technology, it also allows for over-the-air updates and autonomous driving from level 3 or higher. In addition to the eM platform, Hyundai will also release the eS base at the same time. It is designed with 400 volt technology and designed for PBV (Purpose Construction Vehicles). This skateboard platform is designed for transportation vehicles, delivery models or vehicle skid applications and is not intended for use in private customer vehicles.

The Hyundai Group is working on a new electric vehicle platform. As the first model based on the eM, the Stinger-style sports car may come to market in 2025 under the Kia label. The platform allows up to 612 hp and a range of up to 800 km. After the unfortunate Stinger, the brand would again have a top model in the upper middle class.
