The big winner of the chaotic Supersport meeting in Assen is Adrian Huertas. The Ducati rider arrived at the third race of the season in fifth place in the World Championship and led to victory and second place.
As the successor of supersport world champion Nicolò Bulega, Adrian Huertas knows his place this year. But he crashed in the first race at the season opener at Phillip Island and again in the second race at his home race in Barcelona. Before the Assen meeting, the 2021 300cc world champion was already 35 points behind leader Yari Montella (Ducati).
At the Assen meeting, Huertas achieved the impossible: from third on the grid, the 20-year-old raced to victory in the first race, and in the second race he came second behind local hero Glenn van Straalen . And because the pilots in front of him made a mistake in at least one race in the overall standings, the chaos pushed the Spaniard to the top of the World Championship with 86 points!
“Amazing weekend,” enthused Huertas in an interview with SPEEDWEEK.com. “We were able to handle all conditions and we were competitive, whether it was wet or dry. We have reached a good level, we worked hard after my accident in Barcelona and now we are the leaders of the world championship.”
World Supersport drivers had a tough time in Assen. Virtually every session was held on a piste that was wet at least in places. In the second race it rained on the grid and a tire change had to be made.
«The second race was difficult and I didn’t want to take any big risks to win. So I got second place,” explained the Aruba.it Ducati rider. “I am very satisfied. My team did a good job changing the tires. They were very calm and that made me feel good. I trusted my feelings because finally we are running for the world championship and not for every single victory. Now I am leading in the overall result and that means I am one of my favorite titles. We are strong and I think we have a real chance to win the championship.”
