Yamaha and Johnny Rea: Light at the end of the tunnel / Superbike World Championship

At the Superbike meeting in Assen, the weather made for a turbulent and sometimes chaotic weekend. Although Yamaha’s high expectations were not met, race director Andrea Dosoli draws a positive conclusion.

Jonathan Rea and Yamaha were certainly expecting more for the third event of the 2024 Superbike World Championship. But the frequent rainy conditions led to surprising results, especially the victory of Petrucci’s replacement Nicholas Spinelli (Ducati) in the first race from 11th place on the grid, on the other hand, The Northern Irishman’s Superpole victory, was of the unit of expected events.

Because Rea is the best big bike pilot in Assen with 17 wins; The 37-year-old took the top starting position ten times – with Honda (1x), Kawasaki (8x) and Yamaha (1x). In the three races last weekend, the six-time world champion finished 6th and 5th and, after the crash, 19th. Ultimately, it was the best meeting for Rea since he moved to Yamaha.

“I was very happy to see a smiling Jonathan Rea,” race director Andrea Dosoli said, relieved. “He first took pole position on Saturday morning and then fought in the leading group in the first race – only a red flag prevented him from fighting for the podium in the last lap. In race 2 he was unlucky because of a crash that was not his fault. However, It’s clear he’s made great strides in terms of his feelings for the R1 and hopefully we can build on that.”

Dosoli was also impressed with the performance of Remy Gardner, who achieved Yamaha’s best result in Assen with 4th, 4th and 3rd places.

“We should also talk about the good direction of Remy, who was gradually approaching the podium. We are very pleased with his well-deserved third place in Race 2, after coming very close to the podium in Race 1 and the Superpole race,” added Dosoli. “This is a testament to his dedication. You can clearly see that he is getting better and better at handling the Superbike and his crew is doing a great job.
