According to insiders, the latest purchase of Turkish Airlines from Airbus is expected to result in orders worth billions for the Turkish aviation industry. The state-owned airline is close to reaching a similar agreement with the world’s largest aircraft manufacturer and British engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce, the “Bloomberg” news agency reported, citing Turkish government representatives.

The contract involves aircraft parts worth up to 20 billion US dollars (about 18.8 billion euros). According to the news, the agreement may be signed this month.

In December, Turkish Airlines announced the purchase of 230 Airbus aircraft, including 80 of the A350 range. There are also options for more machines. The engines in the A350 series come exclusively from Rolls-Royce.

By expanding its fleet, Turkish Airlines wants to give more competition to airlines from the Persian Gulf, especially Emirates and Qatar Airways. In addition, the range of routes at the new Istanbul Airport is expected to grow.

According to insiders, the Turkish aviation industry will also benefit from the order. Local partners are expected to include state-owned Tusas Engine Industries (TEI). When it comes to large orders abroad, the government tries to ensure that part of the production takes place in its own country.

A spokesman for Turkish Airlines confirmed the imminent signing of the contract without elaborating. An Airbus spokesman declined to comment.

The engine manufacturer already has a joint venture with the Kale Group industrial company in Türkiye. Rolls-Royce boss Tufan Erginbilgic is a citizen of Turkey and England.
