We could expect a presentation and great fanfare from the Korean manufacturer for its revised Tucson, a real hit since its release, the first sales in its segment in Europe (2nd since the arrival of the Model Y, but still 1st SUV thermal). No, it was almost completely unknown that the modified version of the SUV entered the catalog on March 28 in France … when we had not yet discovered the images of the limited edition. Because, yes, you may remember, the long-wheelbase model that was not sold on our roads was revealed last September. The lack of attention is surprising but can be explained by the fact that there would still be many examples of the unchanged model for sale. Regardless, if it’s something new that interests you, here are some things to keep in mind.

Lots of new features, both exterior and interior

We will not focus too much on this matter. After all, what was true for the long wheelbase version is also true for the short wheelbase. Both on the outside and in the passenger compartment, the modifications are significant. On the outside, it is mainly in the front that the changes are visible with the front part of the recast, stronger, and more edges. Another feature that allows the visitor to be identified in relation to what is taking place is the fact that the light signatures are now on three floors, compared to four previously.

It is mainly in the passenger section that the changes are the greatest. Forgetting the refined horizontal dashboard of the previous version, the latest model is inspired by the new generation Kona with a three-spoke steering wheel inspired by Genesis (the top label of the Hyundai-Kia group) and above all a double slab reminiscent of that of the Mercedes Class A. Still modern but ultimately more mainstream.

Narrow range around the hybrid engine

Under the hood, there are also changes. No more petrol and diesel engines of 150 and 138 hp and 48V micro-hybridization, the Tucson is now only offered as a hybrid. Three offers in total. We get the whole perfect combination in a reduced version from 230 to 215 hp. The power is still clearly sufficient despite the impressive size (length 4.51 m, 1 cm more than the model before the restyling).

Another new feature is that you can now choose this engine but with all-wheel drive (previously reserved for the plug-in hybrid variant). Power is the same but CO2 emissions increase, although this remains the same (we’ll come back to this).

Finally, at the very top of the range, a plug-in hybrid version still sits, only in 4×4. It also lost a bit of power, going from 265 hp to 253 hp. Although we can think of a large battery and increased freedom in zero mode, this is not the case. It retains its capacity of 13.8 kWh and an electric range of 62 km.

Blatant inflation

Now let’s come to the price. Logically, with the removal of the 48V hot versions, the base price increases, and not just a little, from around €30,000 to around €37,000 for the 215 hp hybrid in the Initia finish. And again, it’s because Hyundai had the good idea to launch this stripped down Initia. Initially, the Tucson started with the Intuitive livery (now the second level). For the same finish, the increase is €2,850, ouch! Rest assured, the equipment is rich from the first level with front and rear parking assistance, reversing camera, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, hands-free access, etc.

The increase is a bit more in the plug-in mix. Now count on €47,000 in Innovative Finishes (12.3″ digital gauge, 18″ rims, leather upholstery, heated front seats and steering wheel, etc.) compared to €46,250 before.

Please note, the new hybrid variant with all-wheel drive is only offered in two top trim levels (Executive, N Line Executive). So you will have to pay at least €49,800. At this price, the device is fortunately very good: 360 ° camera, Matrix LED lights, tailgate without hands, leather and heated rear seats, etc. Everything is included but you still have to add the penalty. With CO2 emissions between 145 and 146 g/km, this remains the same as €1,629 or €1,761 to top up the final bill. However, a weight tax is added to this. And 1,720 kg, that’s €1,200 more. For the 4×2 hybrid, count on a more reasonable €500 for mass and between €240 and €360 for CO2 emissions.

Finally, the sporty version of the N Line is still there. It makes a difference in terms of style with its 19″ rims, its sharper bumper, its leather-alcantara upholstery and many other style details…

THE LIFE OF MEN

Summing up

Launched last September but in its long run not sold in Europe, the revised SUV has been discreet ever since. Surprisingly, images of the short style we’re supposed to have have been online for a few weeks and have even been on sale since March 28.
