Accident near Bargteheide: Kia is trapped under a tractor-trailer on the A21

On Friday morning there was a serious traffic accident on the BAB 21 between the Bargteheide junction and the Tremsbüttel junction. At around 9.30am, road users reported that shortly after the B404 crossed onto the A21, a car had hit a trailer and was now stuck under the trailer.

The driver of the car was also said to be trapped in his car. The Integrated Control Center South in Bad Oldesloe immediately alerted the volunteer fire departments of Hammoor and Bargteheide, several ambulances and the “Christoph 12” rescue helicopter from Siblin to the highway.

Police officers are independent drivers

Even before the first emergency services arrived on site, two police officers from the Bad Oldesloe road station were able to free the driver from his car. He was unresponsive at the time, so officers immediately began resuscitation measures. After the fire department arrived, they were taken by paramedics and then handed over to the rescue service.

After receiving initial care from an emergency doctor, the 20-year-old driver from Hamburg was carefully driven to the rescue helicopter and then transported to the Hamburg accident clinic with life-threatening injuries.

Police: Kia hit a tractor at high speed

The tractor-trailer driver was not injured. What happened? According to preliminary information from the police, the 20-year-old man was driving his Kia on the A21 towards Bad Segeberg. For unknown reasons, after crossing the B404, he apparently drove a 40-tonne vehicle from Lithuania which was speeding in front of him.

The truck driver saw the impact and immediately steered his car onto the hard shoulder. He stopped there about 100 meters from the actual accident site. The force of the KIA’s impact was so strong that the car was dragged the entire distance until the tractor-trailer stopped.

Emergency services were blocked on the way to the crash

Behind the crash site, traffic was immediately backed up on the A1. This fact once again became a nuisance for emergency services. As operations manager Thimo Bans from the Hammoor Volunteer Fire Department attests, the journey was very difficult.

“Due to the repair of the bridge at the crossing, the vehicles were placed in such a way that we could not pass.”

The emergency services had to pass through the construction site and lost valuable time: “Because of that, we arrived at the scene of the accident late!”

Even when it was two lanes again, some emergency services explain, it was impossible to make progress because, among other things, trucks were stopped in both lanes and had to move aside with difficulty. The ban requires road users to act carefully and, above all, to create emergency routes.

Meanwhile, at the scene of the accident, volunteers from the volunteer fire department pulled the KIA out from under the tractor-trailer using an emergency vehicle winch. To make it easier to save the car, they separated the completely torn engine from the wreckage. The towing company found the car completely destroyed. The tractor-trailer was able to be driven off the highway under its own power. BAB 21 was completely closed to Kiel until around 11:50 am
