This year’s iteration of the US News & World Report’s 2024 High School rankings showed that the top 15 schools came from 12 different states, indicating the best schools are not specific to any region or state. Michigan and California, however, are the only states with more schools in the top 15. Michigan had two, while California had three.

Bloomfield Hills International College was ranked eighth nationally and No. 1 in Michigan, while Macomb International College was ranked 13th nationally and second in Michigan.

The methodology used in the report considered six factors: college readiness, assessment skills, assessment performance, outstanding student achievement, breadth of the college curriculum and graduation rates. College readiness measures participation and performance on Advanced Placement exams and International Baccalaureate exams, and underserved student achievement focuses on students who are Black, Hispanic or from low-income households.

Using this method, schools received an overall percentage score between 0 and 100 to two decimal places. Scores below the 25th percentile are listed in rows rather than a numerical array. Each percentile includes 177 schools, so small changes for any reason can lead to big moves within the rankings, according to the US News data team.

All data is collected from third party sources. US News received AP and IB data directly from the College Board and the International Baccalaureate, where applicable. State assessment data and graduation rates come from each state, and other data comes from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Common Core Data.

US News also works with RTI International, an international nonprofit social science research firm, to evaluate and rank all eligible public high schools nationally, and also provides separate rankings of charter and charter high schools.
