Watch This Lucid Air Sapphire Hit 60 MPH in 1.7 Seconds

Everyone knows the 1,234-horsepower Lucid Air Sapphire is incredibly fast. And yet, watching it in action never fails to attract attention. A recent DragTimes video takes us to Bradenton Motorsports Park in Florida for several passes down a drag strip that, frankly, looks boring. But the numbers are certainly impressive.

Let’s consider these numbers: 1.39, 1.77, 5.77, 8.94, and 154.8. In order, these represent (in seconds) the 60-foot time, the 0-60 mph time, the eight-mile time, the quarter-mile time, and the car’s speed at the quarter-mile mark. Those familiar with drag racing already have context for how insane these numbers are for a street-legal sedan on street tires. For the rest of us, here’s some perspective.

The 60-foot interval represents the first 60 feet the car travels from the starting line. It is an indicator not only of power, but also traction. Dodge says its drag-oriented Challenger Demon 170 can achieve a 60-foot time of 1.24 seconds on race tires, pulling the front wheels off the ground in the process. Full-powered drag racing cars typically have a 60-foot time of less than one second. Here, we have a 5,300-pound luxury sedan on Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tires coming very close in 1.39 seconds. Yes, part of the song has been prepared, but still, this figure is very interesting.

That comes in at 1.77-60 seconds per hour. It’s worth noting that the number includes a one-foot spread, which is common when quoting 60 times an hour in the automotive industry. Without printing, Lucid will still hit the mark in less than two seconds, using 1.93 seconds per on-board data.

With the accelerator firmly planted, the Air Sapphire passes the eight-mile mark in 5.77 seconds, ready to go 123.9 mph. It tops out with a quarter-mile time of 8.94 seconds and a top speed of 154.8 mph. The digitally recorded data is supported by official timing numbers from the track, and a second run with a slightly lower charge on the battery sees the sedan go 8.93 in the quarter.

Tesla Model S Plaid and Challenger Demon 170 were also on the track. Side-by-side racing videos with Lucid are promised soon. Something tells us they had their work cut out for them.
