Mercedes is lowering its expectations with electric cars: the switch will take a long time

Mercedes-Benz promised three years ago to completely switch to electric cars by 2030. The company said that this will only happen if the market allows it. Apparently not, because Mercedes is now focusing less on EVs.

For now expected Mercedes says that by 2030 only half of its cars sold will be electric. In addition, the car maker also includes hybrid cars in the aforementioned fifty percent. Mercedes is clearly taking a step back with its ambitions in the field of electric driving.

Disappointing sales

The direct reason for this news seems to be the disappointing sales of Mercedes. Profits fell by no less than 21 percent in the last quarter. Sales also decreased by 7.4 percent in the United States and by 2.8 percent in Germany. In the whole of last year, there was a total sales of 2.1 percent more than the previous year.

But even the expected fifty percent in electric car sales has not yet been achieved. Of the cars sold in the 4th quarter of 2023, only 21.8 percent were electric or hybrid.

Although there is still a long way to go, the company sold 61.3 percent more electric cars last year compared to 2022. And Mercedes is not giving up: the automaker thinks that its next electric car will still have a big impact to make.
