JoJo Siwa on the Creative Process Behind Her New Single “Karma”

On today’s episode of ‘How It Went Down,’ JoJo Siwa talks about the different versions of “Karma” she had to create before finding the best one, why she’s not surprised about the public’s reaction to the music video and more.

JoJo Siwa:
Hello everyone, my name is JoJo Siwa and this is how my new song and music video “Karma” dropped.

This song is very special and I knew that I wanted this song to be, not just a part of my life, but a part of my life in a big way in such a big picture. At first, I was afraid of text. I was 18 years old, I didn’t want to say b*tch, I didn’t want to say I was a bad girl because I wasn’t a bad girl. So then we did a couple of versions of the song you know, we did a version that was “You were a bad girl. You did bad things.” And then we did “she was a bad girl. He did bad things.” And I was like, well, why are we making it special for girls? “They were bad.” Okay, that doesn’t work. We tried all versions and then nothing was as strong as “I was a bad girl.”

We actually recorded “Karma” six different times. I had six episodes of “Karma,” several times with different sound producers. That was because it is a very big song with many elements. If you listen to the first version of “Karma,” a completely different song, the bridge, a completely different bridge, the bridge was basically the same note all the time and it was really good.
