At a March Madness basketball game between Howard University and the University of Kansas, Vice President Kamala Harris was met with jeers of disapproval when she was spotted in the crowd.
As the Vice President of the United States, one would assume that Kamala Harris’ presence in the audience would be welcomed with nonpareil enthusiasm. Yet, her appearance at the 2021 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament game between Howard University and the University of Kansas at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis was met with cacophonous boos.
The game, which was part of the historic tournament’s opening weekend, saw the crowd vociferously voicing their displeasure as soon as Vice President Harris was spotted in the stands. Bewildered spectators, some of whom had their cameras out, observed the Vice President as she took her seat, only to hear the arena reverberating in derision.
Though the Vice President did not respond to the boos, many spectators have since expressed their confusion as to why such a reaction was directed towards her. Speculation has been rampant, with some suggesting that the crowd was not pleased with the Vice President’s political affiliations or her policies.
However, Vice President Harris has not responded to these theories and it is unclear what the true root of the jeers was. Nevertheless, it is clear that the Vice President was not greeted with the reverence one would expect given her position of power.
The incident has sparked a national debate about the propriety of such a reaction towards a high-ranking official and whether it is ever appropriate to boo a Vice President.
Regardless of the reasoning behind the jeers, the Vice President’s presence at the game was met with a reception that was far from generous.
