Marko does not expect competition from Mercedes, but from Ferrari

In the first free practice sessions at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, it appeared that the Red Bull Racing, Ferrari and Mercedes teams were evenly matched. Qualifying is expected to be very exciting. Helmut Marko, however, sees things differently and expects less from Mercedes.

In the first free practice session in Mexico, the difference between the top six yesterday was only 0.192 seconds. In addition to Ferrari, Red Bulls and Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes, Alpine driver Fernando Alonso was also in good form. Mercedes are expected to participate again this weekend, last week’s updates give the team more confidence.

Red Bull consultant Helmut Marko sees things differently, however. The experienced Austrian thinks that Mercedes will not play a significant role in qualifying later today. Speaking to his compatriots from ServusTV, Marko explains his results: “The analysis shows that we are the fastest together with Ferrari. Braking and heating are important here. But if the weather models are correct, it will be colder on Saturday. and it can even get wet, which makes it easier in terms of brake load.”
