Price: Maserati Grecale (2022) for 84,624 Euros

SUV Maserati Grecale was supposed to start in November 2021 – and in March 2022 the premiere took place. We see an SUV priced from 84,624 euros (until March 2024), which certainly uses many features of its brother Levante with its sports sliding roof and muscular wheel arches, but it is still a little smaller. The Italian compares favorably with its sibling Alfa Romeo Stelvio. In contrast, the Grecale is not only available as a more powerful Trofeo, but also as an electric-only Folgore. Drives: four-cylinder petrol engine or V6 (Trofeo) and electric only (Folgore)

Technically, the Maserati Grecale (2022) is also very closely related to the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, as it uses its Giorgio platform. However, Maserati has greatly modified this and redesigned the engine range. The two four-cylinder petrol engines have a small hybrid system on board and differ mainly in the difference of 30 hp, which is especially noticeable in acceleration times. While the GT with 300 hp (221 kW) sprints to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds, the top-ranked Grecale Modena with 330 hp (243 kW) breaks the mark in 5.3 seconds. 530 hp (390 kW) Nettuno V6 from the MC20. The electric folgore (see paragraph below) is equally powerful.

Maserati Grecale Trofeo

Maserati Grecale Trofeo (2022) priced from 125,124 euros (until March 2024) dominates the brief. There is no fancy rear spoiler adorning its trunk, no carbon fiber extensions on its body. And still there is a super sports engine working under the hood of the SUV. The Nettuno V6 comes straight from the MC20 and was bumped up to 530 hp (390 kW) for social compatibility. In addition to the high power of the high-quality engine with pre-ignition, there is a tolerable consumption of 11.2 l, which is also thanks to the new cylinder deactivation. On the positive side there is also all-wheel drive with an electronic locking differential at the rear, six-piston brakes at the front and a four-pipe exhaust system. The powerful SUV accelerates to 100 in 3.8 seconds and continues to run hard up to 285 km / h.

The interior of the Maserati Grecale Trofeo (2022) is not mercilessly sporty, but logically designed and digitally sophisticated. A special highlight is the new digital clock above the infotainment system. On track days, for example, it can be converted to a G-meter if desired.

The Maserati Grecale Folgore (2024) is on fire alongside the Maserati GT Folgore: For the first time in the brand’s history, the two now have purely electric cars. The electric SUV also introduces a new name suffix by which the battery-electric Maserati will be known in the future: Folgore, in German Blitz. Visually, the BEV is no different from its combustion engine counterpart. The air intakes on the front apron have been improved aerodynamically and the grill has been slightly revised. Otherwise, Folgore doesn’t work without standard E symbols, such as color accents.

Two permanent synchronous motors, each on the front and rear axles, combine to produce a system output of 410 kW (557 hp) and a maximum torque of 820 Nm, which enables the Maserati Grecale Folgore (2024) to reach 100 km/h . in 4.1 s to continue shooting at a maximum speed of 220 km / h. The battery has a capacity of 105 kWh and provides energy for a distance of up to 501 km according to WLTP. The price starts at 124,301 euros (until March 2024).

Exterior: Minor differences to the larger Levante

The biggest visual differences compared to the Levante can be found in the Maserati Grecale (2022) in the higher-mounted headlights and the lack of a hip bend. While the new one is tougher on the outside, the interior is not – so the next Levante could be bigger and more luxurious.

Interior: Luxury, smart and digital

Inside, the Maserati Grecale (2022) is cleaner and more modern than other models from the Trident portfolio. Two screens of 12.3 and 8.8 inches were arranged one above the other and the newly designed column easily contributes to this. Behind it is a full digital instrument display. Maserati also offers an optional head-up display. The central clock is also now digital. It lights up when there are voice commands and works as a display for the new MIA Android infotainment system. This can even be connected to two smartphones at the same time via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Maserati also boasts a standard Sonus Faber sound system with 21 speakers and more than 1000 W of power. At the same time, careful care was taken to ensure that the sound of the engine reaches the interior without an amplifier.

Driving demo: The most sophisticated SUV for the Macan segment

With the beautiful Grecale, Maserati presents a premium SUV to the hot Macan segment. When it comes to work and emotions, it leaves nothing to be desired – a lot. The Maserati Grecale Folgore is a convincing Maserati with its silky performance and high unity. Despite its electric drive, the Folgore is incredibly realistic, its sound is accurate, and its performance is brutal. With a range of more than 400 km and fast charging, even long distances should be possible, and the spacious SUV is an uncomplicated partner in everyday life.

Our conclusion

The entire creation of the Maserati Grecale was characterized by confusion and uncertainty, although this is not the fault of the Italians. First the Stellantis connection changed the card, then came the corona crisis and, last but not least, the chip problem. However, there is no sense that a new era is beginning at Maserati and Grecale. The SUV with its classic design language seems too conservative for that.
