Mazda CX-80: the new seven-seat PHEV

Today Mazda is pulling back the curtain on the CX-80. An addition to their SUV line and new popularity of the brand in Europe. The CX-80 will be available from the fall. Mazda Promises a combination of comfort, convenience and versatility, all ‘made in Japan’.

For the CX-80 is the newest, most spacious car in Mazda’s European range. The US market also has the CX-70 and CX-90, so these won’t be coming to our side of the Atlantic. Driving is controlled by the e-Skyactiv Plug-in Hybrid with All-Wheel Drive. More on this later. At nearly five meters long, the CX-80 is no small boy. It exceeds the CX-60 in size and space. The interior of the CX-80 almost completely takes the design of the CX-60. Mazda is not adding a new luxury dimension. With nappa leather upholstery, maple wood trim and refined infotainment. The third row of seats offers enough space for people up to about 1.70 meters in height, big enough for children (or yours truly). With two USB C connections and four cup holders, the rear passengers will not lack for anything.

design and interior

Up front, the CX-80 retains Mazda’s signature styling. The familiar “Kodo styling” that Mazda uses is definitely back. That means: paying attention to details without unnecessary additions. What follows is a strangely interesting yet subtle combination. In our opinion, the design is successful, let us know what you think in the comments.

When all seats are in use, luggage space is good at 270 litres. With the third row of seats flat, this expands to 680 litres. Don’t you need 7 seats? Then Mazda can also be offered with 6 seats. Causing an additional sense of space. In terms of technology, Mazda strives for the highest level. 12-inch infotainment system, supported by Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Also new features like Alexa voice control, integrated navigation system and Trailer Hitch function for easy positioning in relation to the trailer.

drivetrain and advertised price

The E-Skyactiv PHEV has a total system power of 327 hp and a torque of 500 Nm. 0-100 km/h is done in 6.8 seconds and at a top speed of 195 km/h. Thanks to this power and especially the torque, the CX-80 has a towing power of up to 2500 kg. Electric is 60 km, and WLTP average fuel consumption of 1.6 l/100 km. We must know what this is in reality. Pre-sales of the Mazda CX-80 PHEV begin on May 7. With an Exclusive-Line starting price of €62,390. In our opinion, this puts the Mazda CX-80 where it should be in the market. Much cheaper than, for example, Land Rover Defender 130. But more expensive than, for example, Dacia Dokker.
