Technically, the Mazda CX-70 uses its older brother. Both are on the same platform, which is designed directly for electric drives. Three petrol versions are planned: two 3.3-liter hybrids and a 2.5-liter plug-in hybrid. All come standard with all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

In the CX-90 subcompact, the 3.3-liter turbo inline six-cylinder operates in two performance levels. The base Turbo produces 280 hp and 400 Nm of torque, the Turbo S version has 340 hp and 500 Nm of torque. As a PHEV, the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is paired with a 173 hp electric motor fed by a 17.8 kWh battery. Combined output is 323 hp, maximum torque is 537 Nm. Its electric range is about 50 km.

Despite the similarities between the CX-90 and CX-70, there are minor differences between the two models. The CX-70 has a sportier design, and more gloss black compared to the CX-90, which has more chrome elements. The front looks sharper. The radiator grille has a black mesh design. The rear bumper has also been redesigned and has dummy air intakes at the corners. Dark words can be found on the glass covers, door handles and roof rails. The CX-70 is optionally available on 21-inch wheels with black and gloss surfaces.

In the interior, the CX-70 is similar to the CX-90 – except for the lack of a third row of seats. A unique feature of the CX-70 is the red leather interior with black accent stripes, which combines with the black interior and contrasting red stitching on the door panels and steering wheel to create a striking look.

The CX-70 offers many of the same features as the CX-90, but it’s the first Mazda to offer Amazon Alexa integration in the infotainment system. This enables voice control of some on-board functions such as climate control and infotainment and also syncs with Amazon-enabled home devices. The SUV also has an “Unresponsive Driver Support” system as part of its cruise control and lane keeping. If the driver does not respond to the warning signs, the car will gradually stop in its path and turn on the hazard lights. New features such as remote-controlled rear seats and improved cargo space are intended to make the CX-70 more suitable for everyday use.
