Mazda MX-30 returns to Wankel as a range extender

Technical characteristics, range and prices of the Japanese crossover that combines an electric and rotary motor

After more than 10 years of absence, Wankel engine returns to the front in the role of Range Extender on the Mazda MX-30 electric vehicle signed e-Skyactiv R-EV. The last application was on the RX-8 produced from 2003 to 2012, powered by Renesis with two rotors of 654 cc with 1,300 cc of displacement and 231 HP of power at 8,500 rpm. Above all, it was the engine that enabled the Mazda 787B to win the 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans with its unmistakable sound. A goal reached after decades of evolution and development, which began in 1976 with Cosmo Sport. In Brussels the return of the updated MX-30 in the unprecedented role of Range Extender. Chosen instead of a large and heavy battery pack, it represents further proof of the Hiroshima company’s unconventional approach to the emissions problem.

Mazda Mx-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV: power and range

The propulsion system that drives the MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-Ev provides an electric motor of 170 HP and 260 Nm of torque instead of 145 of the electric MX-30. A single 830 cc and 74 HP Wankel rotor is also installed in the same section as the electric motor. The electric car is powered by a 17.8 kWh battery that replaces the previous 35.5 kWh accumulator, thus guaranteeing a maximum range of 85 km in the Wltc combined cycle. The distance increases to around 110 km driving in the city alone. After the battery runs out, the Wankel can be started which draws from the 50 liter petrol tank until the car is refilled via a cable. The performance of the Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-Ev shows 9.1 seconds in the sprint from 0 to 100 km / h (6 tenths better than the Mx-30 Bev) and the maximum speed is always 140 km / h.

To celebrate the return of the Wankel, the Mazda MX-30 is also available in a limited edition R Edition, distinguished by a Maroon Rouge Metallic exterior color and several special finishes. Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV is offered in 5 trim levels, Prime Line, Exclusive Line, Advantage, Makoto, R Edition, and the price is between 38,150 and 45,650 euros.
