Sixth, Alonso wants more performance from his Aston Martin

The Spanish driver, who started from fifth place on the grid, believes his car is not at the level of the McLarens and Mercedes. Alonso, however, managed to finish ahead of the McLaren of Oscar Piastri, and the two Silver Arrows.

“We were a little bit better than the last Grands Prix, but we lack a bit of speed compared to McLaren and Mercedes. Red Bull and Ferrari are in another category. We are the top five team, which means we should be 9e and 10e and finally we finished in fifth place in qualifying and sixth place in the race. We obviously improved what we had, and I’m happy with that, but we have to keep improving the car. »

Alonso, like teammate Lance Stroll (12e), had an AMR24 on the Suzuka track that was modified compared to the version that participated in the first Grands Prix of the season. If the two-time world champion felt better, we will have to wait for the analysis of all the data to judge whether the progress brought anything this weekend or not.

The Spaniard, however, praised his team’s performance, which according to him is a big part of the results they have achieved since the start of the season: “It is always difficult to compare track to track but now we have a lot of data after the whole weekend, we will analyze everything. The team did everything right on Sunday in terms of strategy, the start was good, the pit stops were amazing, and thanks to these little things we finished sixth instead of ninth or whatever.

I like to see that but basically the speed of the car is still not up to the expected level and we want to improve that. »
