McLaren sets sights on Red Bull: ‘Why isn’t that possible?’

An unexpected positive result in China has given McLaren plenty of confidence for the future, with team boss Andrea Stella now believing the British team can close the gap on Red Bull Racing within a year. With 24-year-old Lando Norris, the racing team from Woking already has an excellent driver.

Not Ferrari, but McLaren turned out to be Max Verstappen and Red Bull’s main rival last weekend. However, this came as a huge surprise to the racing team from Woking. Ahead of the first Chinese Grand Prix since 2019, everyone at McLaren was expecting one of the toughest weekends of the first half of the season. It ended up being the best weekend, thanks to the sprint pole and Norris’ second place in the main race.

Good pace (of the race) and good results have given team boss Stella a lot of confidence for the future. In fact, the Italian now thinks it is possible to acquire Red Bull within a year. “We have lost a chance because before we had a big chance, when they (Red Bull, editor) did not continue,” Stella said in a conversation with Guardian on last season. “That’s why we have to look at things in the long term and in that long term we are on a strong path. If we continue this strong trend in the next twelve months, why not? We can get Red Bull,” Stella said.

Stella praised Norris

The fact that Norris managed to hold off Sergio PĂ©rez in the fastest Red Bull car was proof to Stella that his star driver is becoming a complete driver. “In the race he seems to be more and more stable and able to understand what is going on,” says the McLaren team boss. ‘What we car racing He seems to be mentioning more and more and getting more and more accurate. He has done a great job working with his engineers and the people at the factory to find ways to make small modifications to increase the power of the car. This is his characteristic,” Stella concludes.
