Mitsubishi confirms the arrival of an electric SUV sister to the Renault Scenic

A few weeks ago, the boss of Renault confirmed during a press conference that his production plant in Douai (North of France) will welcome the future model of Mitsubishi. It is enough to put one good song… That of an electric SUV next to the new Scenic. Following another press conference set for the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance on December 6, we learned more about the projects of the brand, which even revealed the first teaser!

Mitsubishi confirms that it will soon launch an electric SUV in the C segment for Europe to improve its range, which is currently being rebuilt. A few months ago, the Japanese manufacturer had to leave the European market and there were only two models left in the list, Space Star and Eclipse Cross. But thanks to the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, the brand is back with a product offering in full development in Europe. Before launching its own cars, whose development is expensive and time-consuming, Mitsubishi initially relies on Renault’s expertise by borrowing some of its models. So, the Japanese brand has just sold Colt and ASX, rebadged Renault Clio and Captur. And it will do so again next year with this new electric SUV, the Renault Scenic’s twin.

Someone with more points than Colt and ASX?

According to the first teaser published by Mitsubishi, Mitsubishi uses the technical base and overall silhouette of the new Renault Scenic for its electric SUV, the name of which we do not know yet. As for Colt and ASX, the differences will be very small, even if the front may be more typical of Mitsubishi by approaching, for example, the latest concepts of the brand as XFC. The three-diamond SUV may also sport a distinctive grille and more cruiser-style fenders, as shown in our exclusive rendering. Likewise, the lighting signature should be distinctive, with a narrow LED strip highlighted by five small horizontal bars. At the back, however, the lights look identical to the Scenic.

Mitsubishi notes that this new model is possible thanks to its investment in Ampère, the new organization dedicated to electric vehicles of the Renault group, in the amount of 200 million euros. Takao Kato, the boss of Mitsubishi, emphasizes that “it is impossible for a company like ours to face alone its and the new division of markets due to the different development of electric vehicles in the country and, therefore, to respond to all the regulatory criteria at the same time also announced a major investment, set at 600 million euros. In turn, the Japanese will develop a new generation of its electric Micra, a technical cousin of the new Renault 5.
