F1 Alonso: The Aston Martin driver agrees to talk to another team for a new contract

Fernando Alonso has signed a new contract with the Aston Martin Formula 1 team. However, the two-time world champion admits that he has only had talks with his current employer.

Since 2023, Alonso has been competing for the racing team owned by Lawrence Stroll and run by team boss Mike Krack. With eight podiums and fourth place in the final standings, the Spaniard enjoyed his best season since the introduction of hybrid power units. Until last Thursday he was out of contract until 2025 and that still applies to more than half the F1 field. Balance the ridership market

“I have also spoken to others, yes,” Alonso admitted to the media after his announcement with Aston Martin. “I think it’s normal that you balance the driver market a little when you start the conversation, you also have to listen to everyone, that’s just a normal procedure and I think it’s good to listen to all the suggestions and see how the market is going. But in my mind, Aston was the logical step for me to take.

It needs more time

“All the other talks were not very serious and we never reached any conclusions or anything like that,” continued the 42-year-old from Oviedo. “Perhaps more time was needed. However, there was a clear desire for Aston to work together and that was exactly what I had. That’s why this happened so easily.” Alonso would rather not say which team he has been in talks with. “I won’t go into detail about which team I spoke to because I don’t think that’s important anymore and this is about Aston Martin and good news for Aston Martin.”
