Mel Tucker, the recently appointed head coach of Michigan State’s football program, has procured the services of an experienced NFL assistant to fill an opening on the East Lansing staff.
Tucker, who was hired in February to replace Mark Dantonio, has appointed Matt Burke to take the position of linebackers coach. Burke, who has supervised the linebackers for the Miami Dolphins for the past three seasons, possesses a wealth of knowledge and know-how garnered from a decade of NFL coaching.
Prior to joining the Dolphins, Burke held assistant coaching positions with the Detroit Lions, Cincinnati Bengals and Philadelphia Eagles. Burke also spent two seasons as a defensive assistant with the Tennessee Titans.
“I am pleased to welcome Matt to the Spartan Football family,” Tucker said in a statement released Wednesday. “His experience coaching at the highest level of football, the National Football League, is invaluable. Matt is a terrific teacher and communicator, and his familiarity with the game and the region will be beneficial to our program.”
Burke has demonstrated an aptitude for developing NFL-level talent, having overseen the ascension of Miami linebacker Jerome Baker, who recorded 111 tackles and five sacks in 2019, his second season in the league.
Burke returns to the Big Ten after a six-year hiatus. He began his coaching career as a defensive graduate assistant at the University of Michigan in 2002, before transitioning to the NFL.
Michigan State’s football program is currently undergoing a significant transition under Tucker’s leadership. Burke’s addition to the staff is the latest move in his effort to restore the Spartans to their former prominence.
