Mercedes-Benz today announced that its class-leading Test Drive system for automated driving under SAE Level 3 conditions has received certification from the State of California.
With this milestone, Mercedes-Benz is the first automaker certified to introduce such a SAE Level 3 system in a production vehicle intended for use on public highways in the most populous state in the United States.
Drive Pilot will be available in the US market as an option for the 2024 model year Mercedes-Benz S-Class and EQS Sedan, with the first vehicles being delivered to customers in late 2023.
The state of Nevada already confirmed the system’s compliance with state regulations in January 2023, and Mercedes-Benz has the ambition to expand the availability of this revolutionary system to other markets in the future.
‘Mercedes-Benz Drive Pilot is the only SAE Level 3 system in the world with international approval. This approval once again proves that downsizing is a safe and therefore the right way,’ says Markus Schäfer, Member of the Mercedes-Benz Group Management Board, Chief Technology Officer and Head of Development.
