Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton set the second fastest time behind his former teammate moments later. Charles Leclerc then took the lead in the Ferrari with a 1:20.487.

After the first 10 minutes had passed, Carlos Sainz jumped to P1. The Spaniard was slightly faster with a time of 1:19.884 than Sergio Perez who took P2 from Leclerc to much fanfare. Times changed quickly. Shortly after, George Russell took matters into his own hands by going a tenth faster than Sainz. Leclerc was now joined by P3.

A yellow flag appeared with 45 minutes remaining in the session when Haas driver Mick Schumacher spun around the track through a 360-degree fault. The German was able to continue his program unscathed. While Max Verstappen was still in the garage, Perez improved to P2.

Max Verstappen made his first meters after 20 minutes of the session and immediately took P1 from Russell. The world champion recorded 1:19,296 as the current fastest time. Perez held P3 for the time being, with Sainz and Leclerc completing the top 5.

Towards the final 20 minutes Mercedes were busy with fast times. George Russell jumped to P1 with a 1:18.399 and was more than ten ahead of teammate Lewis Hamilton. Due to the acceleration of the German team, Verstappen dropped to P3.
