Mercedes S-class and EQS with Drive Pilot system is a revolution on the road

Mercedes S-class and EQS with Drive Pilot system is a revolution on the road

Mercedes S-class with electric EQS These are the first series-produced cars with a Level 3 automated driving system. The Drive Pilot solution drives the car, reacting to all traffic conditions, but the driver must be seated and ready to take over the car. The German brand is the first to offer this convenience on the market. How did it happen?

Mercedes kept its finger on the pulse of German officials and at the same time its engineers were developing new technology. With release the law on Road Traffic (STVG) for level 3 systems in 2017 Germany became the first countrywhich created the legal basis for the daily use of those systems.

How Mercedes took advantage of the rule change

Finally, at the beginning of 2021, the control of the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) for technical approval, according to which the solution can be adopted, came into force. Thanks to this, they can be issued not only in Germany, but also in other countries, of course, as long as the regulations of a particular country allow it. The brand from Stuttgart was waiting for this moment. Mercedes It is also the first car company in the world to comply with UN Regulation 157 for Level 3 systems. How does the Mercedes invention work?

Mercedes S-Class and EQS are a smooth ride, how Drive Pilot works (video)

You press a button on the steering wheel, the light is green, now the OK button and Drive Pilot take over the driver’s duties. Once activated, the AI controls speed and distance and guides car on the side of the road (everything up to 60 km / h, in dense traffic or traffic jams). At the same time, it analyzes and considers road information, road events and road signs.

Mercedes system it also reacts to unexpected road conditions and independently, among others it avoids an obstacle in the lane (a truck stopped on the side of the road that protrudes slightly from the road) or brakes. When it comes to human recognition, there are various sensors car They constantly monitor roads and sidewalks to accurately detect people regardless of their clothing, appearance, posture or other characteristics.

S-class or electric EQS also thanks to this system, they know about the ambulance that comes faster than other vehicles and put themselves in advance of the creature. the belt of life. To find yourself in a certain situation, Drive Pilot mainly uses radar, LiDAR (laser ranging device) and cameras (eg rear window camera and microphone – to capture emergency vehicle signals). Valuable data is also provided by ultrasonic sensors and moisture sensors in the wheel arches.

For safety reasons, Drive Pilot does not work in tunnels, in rainy weather, at night and in areas covered by road works.

Mercedes with Drive Pilot, but what in the event of a breakdown?

For S-Class and EQS with Drive Pilot option some systems in the event of failure are redundant (duplicated). The same safety measures are used in airplanes. This architecture includes the braking system, the steering system, the power supply, as well as the technical aspects of the sensors, including those related to environmental awareness and driving dynamics calculations. The battery, power steering motor, wheel speed sensors and various algorithms that the system uses to calculate data are also designed in this way.

In the event of a breakdown or when the situation becomes so difficult that the system cannot cope with it, the car will ask a human to pick up the car. If the driver does not respond within 10 seconds, eg due to fainting, Drive Pilot will brake the car, stop it in a safe place, activate the hazard lights, open the doors, roll down the windows and then call the emergency services.

Mercedes is driving itself in centimeter, the map is different than in navigation

Mercedes area with Drive Pilot determines position more accurately than conventional GPS systems. A three-dimensional image of the road and its surroundings, with information about the geometry of the road, its characteristics, road signs and events (including accidents or robots), as well as anonymous data collected by LiDAR, cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors, provided with HD digital map. It differs from navigation maps in, among others, greater accuracy, measurement in centimeters, not meters, and a detailed model of intersections and routes. Map data is stored in back-end data centers and is constantly updated.

Each vehicle also stores a snapshot of the information from that map on board, constantly comparing it to back office data and updating the internal database as needed. “All of this enables stable, accurate positioning for mapping the environment, regardless of factors such as shadows or dirt on the sensors,” the engineers explained.

The new Mercedes system works on 13 thousand. km of highway

Mercedes calculated that drivers of the new S-class and the electric EQS with the Drive Pilot system can use its services for a long time. 13 thousand km of German highways. This option increases the price of both cars by PLN 5,000, respectively. EUR (23.5 thousand. PLN) and 7430. EUR (35 thousand. PLN; Driving assistance package Plus for EUR 2430 and Drive Pilot for EUR 5 thousand). Prices do not include VAT.

In parallel with the implementation of the Drive Pilot system in Germany, Mercedes aims to obtain the approval of series solutions in two American states: California and Nevada by the end of 2022. The question about Poland is still open.
