Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff: imitation warning / Formula 1

Austria’s Toto Wolff, boss of the Mercedes-Benz Formula 1 racing team, offers insight into planning and raises hopes that the 2023 Silver Arrow will be even more competitive.

The start of the 2022 Formula 1 season was like nausea for the Mercedes team, who were used to success. Mercedes never set foot on the ground with the new winged car as Ferrari dominated before Red Bull Racing followed suit. Mercedes only managed to win in the last race of the season in Brazil.

Mercedes must completely avoid false starts like 2022. This was also an issue at the legendary Hahnenkamm race in Kitzbühel, where representatives of Formula 1 such as the CEO of the series Stefano Domenicali, Toto Wolff (Mercedes), Andreas Seidl (Sauber) and the Dutch AlphaTauri newcomer Nyck de Vries discussed the escape.

When looking to 2023, Wolff seems cautious. The 51-year-old Austrian says: “The simulations are actually saying that we should have reached the end of our problems. But that’s what happened last year, and then the car didn’t go straight. We will start testing in Bahrain at the end of February and then we will see if we have solved the problems.”

In Kitzbühel, American figure skating star Lindsay Vonn was the first woman to experience Streif’s ice runs under lights as part of an elaborate Red Bull campaign.

On the issue of women in Formula 1, Wolff says: “I am the biggest advocate for women in Formula 1. My wife Susie was the last woman in a GP race (that was in 2014 with Williams, editor). When it comes to developing female talent, we have to start much earlier, I would say in the go-kart area.
