The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) has applauded the 2023 Federal Budget for its inclusion of Métis self-government. The budget, which was presented by Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland on April 19th, makes specific mention of the MNO and its goals. In a statement, MNO president Margaret Froh said, “The MNO is excited to see the government’s commitment to advancing Métis self-government and taking meaningful steps to address the unique needs of Métis citizens.”
The budget includes $60 million over five years for the MNO to pursue a number of initiatives related to self-government, such as developing and implementing policies, developing systems to manage and provide services, and strengthening the Métis Nation’s governance structure. In addition, the budget commits $25 million over five years to the MNO to develop programs and services that address the needs of Métis citizens, including in the areas of health, housing, and education.
The MNO is pleased that the government is taking this meaningful step forward to support the Métis Nation’s self-government. This is an important recognition of the distinct needs of the Métis Nation and its citizens. The investment will support the MNO in building capacity to deliver programs and services to its citizens, and in furthering its self-government goals.
The MNO is also encouraged by the government’s commitment to honouring the spirit and intent of the Métis Nation’s agreements with the Crown. The budget commits $195 million to the implementation of the Métis Nation’s agreements, which will support the implementation of rights and self-government for the Métis Nation.
The MNO is hopeful that this is just the beginning of a long-term, meaningful relationship with the government to advance the Métis Nation’s self-government agenda. The MNO looks forward to working with the government to ensure that this budget commitment is fully implemented and that the Métis Nation’s goals and aspirations are achieved.
The Métis Nation of Ontario is grateful to the government of Canada for its commitment to the Métis Nation and its citizens. This budget is a positive step forward in the recognition of the Métis Nation’s self-government and its unique needs. The MNO looks forward to continuing to work together with the government to ensure that this budget commitment leads to meaningful and lasting change for the Métis Nation and its citizens.
