The illustrious Rolls-Royce owned by esteemed actor Michael Caine, which was famously purchased following his being ejected from a dealership for appearing too scruffy, has been sold at auction for an impressive sum.
The luxurious motor car, a 1967 Silver Shadow, was sold for £165,000 by auction house Bonhams, who had estimated its value at between £125,000 and £175,000. Caine purchased the vehicle in 1978, after being denied a test drive in a dealership due to his informal attire.
The Rolls-Royce was one of several classic cars included in Bonhams’ ‘Les Grandes Marques du Monde’ auction. It was sold to a private collector, and had been subject to a full service and ‘thorough mechanical check’ prior to the sale. The car is finished in ‘Desert Sand’ and includes a tan leather interior, as well as an auxiliary picnic table.
The actor was famously quoted as saying: “I bought it because I was so angry. I didn’t complain, I just went out and bought it. I thought, ‘well, you won’t have me in your showroom, so I’ll show you’.”
The motor car has since become a source of great pride for the iconic actor, who has owned the vehicle for more than four decades. In an interview with the Daily Mail, Caine stated that he took great pleasure in driving the car around London, and that “it was a real joy”.
The successful sale of the classic car marks an impressive milestone in the history of the Rolls-Royce brand, which has become an iconic symbol of luxury and sophistication.
The 1967 Silver Shadow is just one of many classic cars that have been sold at auction by Bonhams this year, demonstrating the continuing demand for vintage vehicles.
The esteemed Rolls-Royce that was once purchased by Michael Caine in a bid to prove a point, has been successfully sold by Bonhams for a commendable sum, further demonstrating the strength of the classic car market.
