Chief designer Michael Mauer on his classic Porsche Taycan

Michael Mauer, Vice President Style Porsche, has put together his best Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo with the help of Porsche Car Configurator. Mauer explains why he put together this Porsche Taycan, and what his job as Porsche’s chief designer entails.

How did you choose the exterior color?

“Many colors, many tastes. Everyone has different opinions, I like gray and green tones. But I think those colors also match the Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo very well. As a designer I am always concerned with how something looks. So I often look at colors that go well with something, and which, in my opinion, go a little with something. Ultimately it’s a matter of personal taste. For my setup I chose Alex gray, from the color scheme of choice. It’s not a bright color , and at first you don’t know if it’s green or gray. But that’s because the color has many layers, depending on the weather and the way the light hits it.

“I also chose several parts of the body in black, which in my opinion fit in very well. I really like the harmony when it comes to the use of colors. That’s why I also chose the LED lights of the tinted color matrix including the Glacier ice in the front, and the lights rear with illuminated black ‘PORSCHE’ logo on rear. Matches the color and rims well.”

What rims are on your Taycan best?

“As a designer, I think there are no rims that are too big, there are rims that are too small. So it was easy for me, they had to be bigger rims. Again, the color ensures that the composition and proportions look better. I chose 21-inch Cross Turismo Design wheels, painted black. I wouldn’t choose them for a Porsche 911, but they go well with this Taycan.”

What is important to you in the interior?

“When I design the interior, I always try to make sure that the driver is as little distracted as possible. That’s why I like subtle and dark interiors. I like to drive myself, so I think it’s important not to be distracted. I chose to sew Lime Beige and the interior of black leather. It matches very well, and I also chose the accent package in black silver. Like the outside, I have actually thought about it for a very long time, and it could be that in two weeks I would have made a different choice and started to have doubts! I got a choice others are easy to do, although I know our models well. Attention to detail is very important in the high-end luxury segment, it shows how carefully our cars are designed.”

How do you build a Porsche?

“On the outside you think about dimensions and proportions: is it attractive and balanced? How does the car look with the wheels down? That’s really the first step. Then comes the finish, which you think about the shape of the headrests, for example. The third phase is more focused details, and with an emphasis also on the interior. The most important things are the design, how the materials used feel and the performance of the different parts of the interior. In addition, the acoustics should not be reduced, what sound does a switch or a door close make? Or when I move in the seat? These are all details that should fit together to ensure that the customer finally gets into his dream car.

Porsche is driven by dreams. What do dreams mean to you?

“For me, dreaming means freeing yourself from all limitations. Sometimes it’s good to leave everything behind and think about what is possible if there are no limitations. I think every creative person should dream of being like this mentally in the future, so that you can isolate yourself and the present place, as it were.

What advice do you have for using the Porsche Car Configurator?

“With the Porsche Car Configurator you can put together your new car according to your own wishes. It’s better to try new things and rely on your gut feeling than to think every option too wisely. It doesn’t matter if you choose a particular color or lip, the first response is often the best. This way you can give your own personality to Porsche.
