Lexus is putting the development center to work

Toyota has fully commissioned another part of its research and development center, Technical Center Shimoyama. In addition to the visitor area, the Lexus development department is located in a new location directly on the local race track. Strategically located in the mountainous area between the cities of Toyota City and Okazaki City, Toyota utilizes the natural terrain for a challenging track layout with many elevation changes and curves.

Groundbreaking ceremonies for the construction of the research and development center in Shimoyama were held in April 2018. A year later, the central section was completed, followed in October 2021 by the eastern section, including a high-speed track and a special test track. which simulates specific road conditions around the world. The western part of the station, which includes the visitor center and the development of the car, is now complete and operational.

In the future, employees from all areas, including planning and design, development and construction as well as prototyping and evaluation, will come together in one place to jointly develop new models for Lexus and the Gazoo Racing car department. In addition to driving on the test track, digital models are also used for vehicle development. About 3,000 people will work in the technical center. The visitor center is used to meet and talk with business partners and suppliers.

Approximately 60 percent of the property’s total area (approximately 650 hectares) consists of preserved trees and green areas as well as new green areas. Deep attention was paid to the conservation and care of the natural environment. The Environmental Education Center was completed in the eastern region in March 2023. Here Toyota is working with local residents to protect the environment. In addition to adventure events, this also includes “Satoyama”. This Japanese term refers to areas where nature has been carefully created by people around cities and which are an important part of a sustainable ecosystem. Together with experts, local authorities and local community members, Toyota continues to work on environmental initiatives here. (or)
