Van Gameren remains critical: ‘Did you think Verstappen got ten this weekend?’

Rob van Gameren thinks that Max Verstappen can even win in Aston Martin now. He discusses the Dutchman’s top form with Rob Kamphues in a new episode of Fall in the Kitchen. Van Gameren doubts whether Verstappen deserves a top ten for the weekend in China, and Kamphues says he really hasn’t left anything behind.

Verstappen was again the best player of the weekend after taking two wins at the Shanghai International Circuit. Red Bull Racing, like other teams, went to China with doubts, as Formula 1 had not competed there for five years. That didn’t seem to matter to Verstappen, he won both races with great power. If someone looks very seriously, it can be said that he cannot get a perfect ten for the weekend, because he did not take a good position for the sprint race. “Okay who’s going to get an A?” Van Gameren asks as he and Kamphues begin to give the stats for the weekend.

‘Did you give Max a ten this weekend?’ Van Gameren continues. “Then what did he leave behind?” Kamphues answers. “Critics can say: he was not in the race,” says the Ziggo Sport analyst. ‘Ten minutes then? This guy hasn’t put a foot wrong all weekend. All weekend,” Kamphues insists. ‘Ten minutes then. Who gets ten then? Alonso?’ Van Gameren was still not sure if he wanted to give ten at all. That means that things can’t be better. Or Norris, the pole position and the car that is usually third four in order. But then we have to forget the sprint start for a while.’

Not enough for Stroll and Tsunoda

If anyone should get ten, the gentlemen agree that it should be Verstappen. Then unsatisfactory marks can also be distributed. It is clear to Van Gameren who will go home with a poor score. ‘Tsunoda had an amazing weekend. If you’re close to Magnussen, you know you’re not one of them. He was a little angry, and then the pipe came. He was also out in Q1 and in the qualifying race as well. It’s not enough,” says Van Gameren. His teammate Daniel Ricciardo had a good one speed, but he was unlucky when Lance Stroll collided with him during the restart. “Stroll gets one for everything,” Van Gameren sounds confident.

“I’m happy that Alonso is still at Aston Martin to show how it can be done,” the Ziggo analyst continues. Alonso qualified third during sprint qualifying and also performed well during other sessions. Finally, Aston Martin crashed and was no longer on the podium. “Do you think Max would win if he was in one of those Aston Martins?” Kamphues asks. “Yes,” replies Van Gameren, who does not feel it necessary to confirm his answer. And Lewis, finally? What grade does he get?’ gentlemen continue. ‘Nine on Saturday and three on Sunday. That’s an average of six, which is still pretty good!’
