Chinese carmaker Chery will soon produce cars at a single plant in Barcelona, ​​Spain. In joint venture with EV Motors of Spain former Nissan factory took, the first cars are scheduled to be built this year. The two companies announced a similar agreement on Friday.

At the factory that Nissan closed in 2021, the electric version of the Omoda 5 SUV is expected to start from the end of next summer. Two more models will follow next year. The plant will produce electric vehicles and combustion models. By 2029, the annual production capacity is expected to be 150,000 vehicles. In addition to Chery cars, cars from the Spanish brand Ebro, which is owned by EV Motors, will also be built at the plant in the future.

BYD is building a factory in Hungary

With production in Spain, Chery beats BYD and is the first Chinese manufacturer to produce cars in Europe. The Chinese competitor is currently building a factory in Szeged, Hungary. Production there will probably start in 2027. The plant will have a capacity of 200,000 vehicles per year. BYD also wants to produce batteries there.

With their European production facilities, Chinese automakers can avoid potential protectionist tariffs that the EU might impose. The European Union Commission is currently investigating whether electric cars in China benefit from illegal subsidies.

Chery started selling its Omoda and Jaecoo brands in Spain earlier this year. In Germany, the manufacturer wants to start selling two SUV brands in the third quarter.
