A spate of motor vehicle thefts targeting Kia and Hyundai models in the United States has become increasingly rampant in recent months, prompting an urgent warning from the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB).

The NICB has issued a dire alert for owners of Kia and Hyundai vehicles after the organization observed a surge in stolen vehicles from these automakers in the past few months.

As per the NICB’s findings, the most frequently pilfered Kia and Hyundai models, by far, are the Optima, Sonata, and Sorento. Furthermore, the group asserted that the majority of the car thefts have occurred in five states: California, Georgia, New Jersey, Texas, and Florida.

The NICB highlighted that the thefts are mainly being perpetrated using a technique known as “the relay attack.” This form of motor vehicle theft involves two people working in tandem; one utilizes a device to amplify the signal from a key fob, while the other uses the signal to gain access to the vehicle and drive it away.

The organization has urged owners of Kia and Hyundai models to take extra precautions to protect their vehicles, such as using a steering wheel lock or installing a kill switch. Additionally, the NICB has suggested that owners should store their key fob in a Faraday bag, which blocks any wireless signals and prevents relay attacks.
