JD Power’s latest study has revealed that the most reliable compact SUV isn’t a Toyota or Honda, despite the two manufacturers’ longstanding dominance in the segment. The report, based on the responses of over 35,000 original owners of 2020 model-year vehicles, indicates that the Hyundai Kona is the most dependable compact SUV, edging out its Japanese rivals and a host of other contenders.
The Kona, which debuted in 2018, has been highly praised for its roomy interior, ample cargo capacity, and upscale styling. Now, thanks to its standout performance in JD Power’s survey, it can add reliability to its list of accolades. The study evaluated the compact SUVs on a range of metrics, including mechanical and engine problems, build quality, fit and finish, and driveability. The Kona’s score of 82 out of a possible 100 points was enough to earn it the top spot.
The survey results were a shock to many industry watchers, as Toyota and Honda have long held a commanding lead in the compact SUV segment. The Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V have consistently topped the sales charts and have been lauded for their dependability. The Kona, however, has proven to be a formidable challenger, with its relatively low price tag and cutting-edge technology providing a compelling alternative to the Japanese stalwarts.
The JD Power survey confirms that the Hyundai Kona is the most reliable compact SUV, a finding that could lead to increased sales for the Korean manufacturer and a shift in the competitive landscape. While Toyota and Honda still remain the top two contenders in the segment, the Kona is proving to be an able and reliable competitor.
