Joy at the home race: EAB Ducati celebrates first podium / Supersport World Championship

During the winter, Dutch supersport team EAB Racing switched to Ducati and signed Niki Tuuli. At the home race in Assen, an eager jump on the podium was achieved.

Niki Tuuli is one of the best drivers in the World Supersport Championship, but the Finn has been unlucky with injuries in recent years. After Triumph did not renew his contract, the 28-year-old reached an agreement with EAB team boss Ferry Schoenmakers for 2024. At this time it was already known that the Dutch team would be moving from Yamaha to Ducati – Schoenmakers were already relying on motorcycles V2 from Bologna in the Superstock 1000 class, which was canceled in 2018.

But the transition was difficult for various reasons. After Phillip Island and Barcelona, Tuuli had scored only two points. “That was the hardest start to the season of my career,” Tuuli said in an interview with SPEEDWEEK.com. “We expected more, but the winter was too short, the bike was new to the team and all the parts were delivered very late. So our preparation was not good. We traveled to Australia with only a few laps on the Ducati and we didn’t know how we compared to the others. Nothing that worked at least at Phillip Island. It was a step forward for Barcelona, but we realized that we needed more laps for me and the team to understand the bike.”

The third event of the season in Assen was EAB Racing’s home race, but after starting 5th in Superpole, a wet corner in the first race was the Finn’s undoing – but the Ducati rider was one of beneficiaries in difficult circumstances. in the second race, where he finished third and gave the Dutch team their first podium finish. “The accident in the first race was my fault. But I went into the race on Sunday with confidence,” said Tuuli. “Of course I’m still happy about our result, but at the same time I’m a little angry because there was a chance to win . We lost a few seconds in the pits, I think around seven. That’s why I had to push hard and when I met the people in front, the tire was finished.”

Tuuli has been in the business long enough to know that the Assen race does not reflect the true balance of power. “In a weekend like this it is impossible to seriously assess how good or bad we are now. But I think my team was happy because we were in the top six in every session and we worked well together. This result belongs to the team and we can build on it!”
