The first match for the Mustangs proved to be a tight affair, as they battled the host Wildcats to a 1-1 draw. The Mustangs found the back of the net first, with a goal from senior striker Jessica Smith midway through the first half. The Wildcats answered almost immediately, with a near-post finish from freshman midfielder Emily Gifford.
The Mustangs then faced the University of Utah in the second match of the day. Despite a strong defensive effort, the Mustangs were unable to contain the Utes and fell 3-1. Utah opened the scoring early with a header from sophomore forward Sarah Williams in the fourth minute. The Mustangs managed to level the score shortly before half-time with a strike from sophomore midfielder Lauren Anderson. However, the Utes took control of the match in the second period, scoring two more goals to seal the victory.
Overall, the Mustangs had a successful Arizona Invitational, picking up four wins and three losses. The team will now look to carry this momentum into the rest of their season as they prepare for their next challenge.
