Lionel Richie once spent a large amount of money to buy seven Mercedes-Benz cars at the same time.

Actor and producer Lionel Richie loves his cars. Unfortunately, the celebrity had to settle for a facsimile of his dream car earlier. However, Lionel Richie bought a large part of California Mercedes-Benz car dealers to celebrate his success with Commodores.

Lionel Richie, fondly remembers his second car, a Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL. However, he did not buy a Mercedes-Benz as a standalone purchase. No, Richie went into the dealership and bought seven Mercedes-Benzes luxury cars at the same time.

After sitting down for an interview with the then presenter of “Top Gear” BBC Jeremy Clarkson, Lionel Richie talked about his taste and experience with cars. Richie revealed to Clarkson on the 2004 show that he had always loved cars, and his first desire was a British sports car.

“I couldn’t afford an XKE,” Richie said of his prospect of owning an American asset Jaguar E-Type. Instead, he bought a cute little Datsun 280Z, a car he described as a “discount version” of the XKE.

Better still, later in the conversation, Richie refers to a time in his life when his famous group, the Commodores, achieved unexpected levels of success with their second album. To celebrate the achievement, Richie and the Commodores decided to give each other a car giveaway. So, the singer-songwriter went back to the same dealer where he had bought the Datsun. However, instead of buying one car for another band member, Richie wanted to buy seven cars to celebrate with his bandmates.

During the purchase, the owner of the dealership was worried and short with Richie after his request to buy seven cars. However, Richie said a quick call to the president of Bank of America convinced him. Understandably, the news that Richie was so successful was music enough to the salesman’s ears.
