Putin’s friend is breathing new life into the Spyker racing car brand

The intention is that three different types of Spyker will be released next year, the parties announced on New Year’s Day. For this purpose, a new production company is established, which Muller will manage. According to Muller, the agreement is the ‘starting point’ to rebuild Spyker.

The new detectors will be designed and built partly in Russia and partly in Germany, with the financial arm operating from Luxembourg. The final meeting will be held in the Netherlands. According to Spyker, the latter also pays tribute to the Dutch racing car brand’s roots.

Half a million cars

Spyker was founded in 1880 by Hilversum coachbuilders Hendrik-Jan and Jacobus Spijker, who designed, among other things, the Golden Coach. Cars and airplanes were added in the early twentieth century, but Spyker was closed in 1926.

Muller re-registered the name in 1999. Since then he has tried to establish himself as a manufacturer of exclusive sports cars. The new Spyker quickly cost three tons, rising to more than half a million euros, but more than a few were made in a year.

At the beginning of this year, Dutch Spyker was declared bankrupt. Before that, Muller had already transferred the remains of the car manufacturer to Spyker Ltd. Rotenburg and Pessis have now concluded an agreement with the British company.

In addition to production areas, new service centers must also be created. These will be built on the French Cote d’Azur, with Monaco and Cannes being an attractive sales area for luxury cars, but also in the area near the borders of Luxembourg, Belgium and France.

Muller is known to have great faith in Rotenberg, whom he has known for years. The Russian businessman is said to be one of the biggest fans and collectors of Spyker cars in the world. In addition, he is well known in the racing world with his SMP Racing team, of which Pessis is a co-owner.

Good for 1.1 billion

64-year-old Boris Rotenberg, along with his brother Arkady, who is six years old, have been good friends with Putin since childhood. The three met on the judo mat, but remained close for the rest of their lives. When Putin established a state-run vodka factory in 2000, Arkady was put in charge.

The company soon became a cash machine, with profits channeled to their SMP Bank. With the money, the brothers built a business empire in the oil and gas sector, with clients such as Gazprom. According to Forbes, Boris is worth 1.1 billion euros, his brother Arkady more than twice that.

After Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, the United States and the European Union imposed sanctions against some of Putin’s supporters. Among them are the Russian brothers, to whom Boris was just sent by the United States. By punishing Putin’s cronies, the West hoped to force a change in behavior. The restrictions will apply at least until March next year.
